Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho sees this year’s influx of older European club stars into Major League Soccer as a key step in the North American league’s global evolution.
From former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard going to the Los Angeles Galaxy to fellow Englishman and Chelsea icon Frank Lampard signing with New York City and long-time Stamford Bridge teammate Didier Drogba going to Montreal, MLS has brought big names to a growing fan base hungry for top talent.
“The evolution is clear. You are getting superstars, people like Drogba, Gerrard, Frank Lampard,” Mourinho said. “I can see the difference. I can feel the difference.”
Add Italian star Andrea Pirlo and Spaniard David Villa with New York City and Brazil’s Kaka with Orlando and MLS has gone well beyond the days when only David Beckham’s Galaxy could arouse interest.
“Our sport is not the king here,” Mourinho said during Chelsea’s recent US tour. “Bringing our best teams and players feeds the pressure to grow.”

The Portuguese manager sees preseason US tours from top European sides as part of building that MLS evolution and new pools of fans for overseas clubs as well.
“To leave a good image for our clubs is the most important thing, and to contribute to the power of our sport in the United States,” Mourinho said.
“The next evolution is to bring them a bit younger, with more than a couple of years, with more to give to MLS.”
Toronto might have started that movement, having let Jermain Defoe return to Europe and brought in 28-year-old Italian international Sebastian Giovinco, the “Atomic Ant” who spent most of his time at Juventus on loan to other clubs.
And 26-year-old Mexican star Giovanni Dos Santos has brought fresh excitement to the Galaxy following the arrival of Gerrard.
“Twenty years on, MLS has a culture and pride and resonance,” former US and MLS stalwart Alexi Lalas said. “Signing players in the prime of their career is the next step.”
As MLS draws more attention in Europe, younger players ponder North America as an alternative.
“Why not?” said 26-year-old Belgian international Toby Alderweireld of Tottenham. “The league is growing. They are putting a lot of money in it, so a lot of big players from Europe are coming. So why not here?”
Spurs’ 19-year-old prospect Dele Ali, new at Tottenham after a stay at Milton Keynes Dons, said the vote of support from the English greats and others is starting to resonate with younger talent.
“Definitely,” Ali said. “Obviously it shows with the players that come over — Gerrard, Lampard, all of them. The best players in the world are coming over and that shows it’s going in the right way.”

Tailors and retailers miss out on back-to-school rush
Tailors and retailers across the city said it was an ominous start to what is usually a busy season for sales.
With many parents opting to continue home learning for their children, the usual rush to buy school uniforms was muted this year.
“So far we have taken about 70 to 80 orders for items like shirts and trousers,” said Vikram Attrai, manager at Stallion Bespoke Tailors in Dubai.
“Last year in the same period we had about 200 orders and lots of demand.
“We custom fit uniform pieces and use materials such as cotton, wool and cashmere.
“Depending on size, a white shirt with logo is priced at about Dh100 to Dh150 and shorts, trousers, skirts and dresses cost between Dh150 to Dh250 a piece.”
A spokesman for Threads, a uniform shop based in Times Square Centre Dubai, said customer footfall had slowed down dramatically over the past few months.
“Now parents have the option to keep children doing online learning they don’t need uniforms so it has quietened down.”

Explainer: Tanween Design Programme
Non-profit arts studio Tashkeel launched this annual initiative with the intention of supporting budding designers in the UAE. This year, three talents were chosen from hundreds of applicants to be a part of the sixth creative development programme. These are architect Abdulla Al Mulla, interior designer Lana El Samman and graphic designer Yara Habib.
The trio have been guided by experts from the industry over the course of nine months, as they developed their own products that merge their unique styles with traditional elements of Emirati design. This includes laboratory sessions, experimental and collaborative practice, investigation of new business models and evaluation.
It is led by British contemporary design project specialist Helen Voce and mentor Kevin Badni, and offers participants access to experts from across the world, including the likes of UK designer Gareth Neal and multidisciplinary designer and entrepreneur, Sheikh Salem Al Qassimi.
The final pieces are being revealed in a worldwide limited-edition release on the first day of Downtown Designs at Dubai Design Week 2019. Tashkeel will be at stand E31 at the exhibition.
Lisa Ball-Lechgar, deputy director of Tashkeel, said: “The diversity and calibre of the applicants this year … is reflective of the dynamic change that the UAE art and design industry is witnessing, with young creators resolute in making their bold design ideas a reality.”

‘FSO Safer’ - a ticking bomb
The Safer has been moored off the Yemeni coast of Ras Issa since 1988.
The Houthis have been blockading UN efforts to inspect and maintain the vessel since 2015, when the war between the group and the Yemen government, backed by the Saudi-led coalition began.
Since then, a handful of people acting as a skeleton crew, have performed rudimentary maintenance work to keep the Safer intact.
The Safer is connected to a pipeline from the oil-rich city of Marib, and was once a hub for the storage and export of crude oil.
