Organisers expect strong field for the event in March
The ITU World Triathlon Abu Dhabi will start next year’s World Triathlon Series in March. Entries are now open to the public.
This event, to be held on Yas Island on March 3-4, will see professionals, serious amateurs and first timers all competing on the same course as world champions and Olympic medallists.
Abu Dhabi Sports Council (ADSC) is again supporting the event as the host partner.
“We are privileged to be the only Middle East city to host the World Triathlon Series,” ADSC general secretary Aref Hamad Al Awani said.
“This is an event which ticks all the right boxes for us and proves our capability as a world-class sporting venue. By bringing the elite here to inspire our residents [we are] delivering an event which can engage the wider Abu Dhabi, UAE and regional community.”
The World Triathlon Series’ dramatic wrap up in Mexico last month culminated in the two-time Abu Dhabi champion Mario Mola of Spain taking home his first World Series title.
Mola was followed by Britain’s Jonathan Brownlee, who also competed in Abu Dhabi in 2015.
The third staging of the event in Abu Dhabi will again have multiple distance options.
The race features several categories such as Sprint (750-metre swim, 20-kilometre cycle, 5km run), which is the ideal starting point for beginners; Olympic (1,500m swim, 40km cycle, 10km run) and Maxi (1,500m swim, 80km cycle, 20km run).
There is also a junior triathlon and other various races available to children aged between five and 15.
“We have the capacity to welcome over 3,000 amateur athletes across Sprint, Olympic and Maxi distances and our junior triathlons,” event director Gary Marescia said. “So I encourage everyone to plan early and give themselves plenty of time to train and prepare.”
