LONDON // England pacemen Chris Jordan and Liam Plunkett have been ruled out of the remainder of the one-day series against New Zealand, the England and Wales Cricket Board announced on Saturday.

Sussex all-rounder Jordan has a side strain while Yorkshire fast bowler Plunkett has a thigh strain and they are now set to miss the final three games of a five-match series with the Black Caps.

“Both players will now undergo a rehabilitation programme and their response to treatment over the coming days will determine the timescale for a return to competitive cricket,” an ECB statement said.

Jordan’s figures of one for 97 against World Cup finalists New Zealand at The Oval on Friday were the second worst by an England player in all one-day internationals.

Both Jordan and Plunkett featured in the first two matches of this series - England’s record-breaking 210-run win at Edgbaston on Tuesday and New Zealand’s 13-run rain-affected victory at The Oval which levelled the series at 1-1.

Somerset all-rounder Craig Overton was added to England’s squad as injury cover for Jordan.

The 21-year-old Overton has played just 15 senior one-day matches for Somerset and while his figures may not be that impressive -- he averages just 10.54 with the bat and 54.20 with the ball -- he is regarded as one of the most promising young talents in the English game.

A decision on who will replace Plunkett is “expected to be made in the next 24 hours”, the ECB said.

However, England do have alternatives to their injured pair already in the squad in Northamptonshire all-rounder David Willey and Durham quick Mark Wood.

The series continues at Southampton on Sunday, with the last two matches taking place at Trent Bridge (June 17) and Chester-le-Street (June 20).

Injury ends Trent Boult’s England tour

Trent Boult has been ruled out of the remainder of the Royal London Series because of a back injury.

New Zealand’s left-arm swing bowler was an unexpected absentee from Sunday’s third one-day international against England at the Ageas Bowl, replaced by debutant Ben Wheeler.

Then with the series score level at 1-1, it was announced in a New Zealand press release that he is to return home with a stress injury to his back.

New Zealand have yet to name a replacement for Boult in the final two matches at Trent Bridge and Chester-le-Street, but batsman Colin Munro has joined the squad following all-rounder Corey Anderson’s tour-ending back injury.
