JOHANNESBURG // South Africa fast bowler Dale Steyn has been ruled out of the third Test against England after failing to recover from a shoulder injury, a big blow for the Proteas as they look to even the four-match series.

Steyn missed the drawn second Test in Cape Town with the injury, but he was retained in the squad for the final two matches and was expected to be available. He was hurt during the first Test, won by England.

South Africa coach Russell Domingo says Steyn is not ready to return and will undergo further scans.

England said on Monday that former national team spinner Robert Croft will join the coaching staff to work with the one-day squad for their five-match series against South Africa next month.
