Gardner brace earns Birmingham the points against Blackburn

Premier League round-up Ben Foster saves a penalty against Blackburn as Birmingham register their first win of the season thanks to midfielder Craig Gardner.

Alex McLeish believes Ben Foster will provide a stern challenge to Joe Hart for the England goalkeeping jersey after his stunning display in Birmingham's win over Blackburn, which included saving Morten Gamst Pedersen's penalty. The Scot said: "Foster was excellent. The first home game and he's saved us points already. It's a brilliant start for him, he made the most brilliant penalty save."

Harry Redknapp, the Tottenham manager, said the referee was right to deny Stoke a late equaliser. A Jon Walters shot appeared to go over the line but play continued and Spurs secured a 2-1 win thanks to a brace from Gareth Bale. Redknapp said: "It was a foul on the goalkeeper." Stoke striker Mamady Sidibie suffered an Achilles injury that could rule him out for the rest of the season.

Avram Grant insisted he was "very happy" with West Ham's performance despite seeing them crash to a 3-1 defeat at home to bogey team Bolton. A Matthew Upson own goal and a double from Johan Elmander ensured Bolton left Upton Park with three points, while Mark Noble scored from the penalty spot after Carlton Cole missed his first-half spot kick.

Manager Roberto Di Matteo was delighted to see his gamble pay off after West Brom debutant Peter Odemwingie sealed victory for the Baggies over Sunderland. The Italian put the Nigeria forward straight into his starting XI, and Odemwingie responded in fine style, notching the winner nine minutes from time. "He is not only an individual, but also a team player," said Di Matteo. "We can see that he is a quality player."
