A picture of England manager Sam Allardyce, left, and Wayne Rooney during an England training session before last Sunday's 2018 World Cup qualifier against Slovakia makes the cover of The National Sport on Friday, September 8, 2016.
Steve Luckings writes in a comment that the pair’s contradictory comments, made after the 1-0 win in Trnava, about which position Rooney was asked to play in the match only add to the growing confusion about Rooney’s continuing role in the national team.
He argues that, with Rooney's record in qualifying matches – thirty of Rooney's record 53 England goals have come in either World Cup or European Championship qualifiers, 14 in the last two campaigns alone – the Manchester United and England captain should be deployed as a striker, not a midfielder, if England are to get the best out of him.
