Wayne Rooney completes move to DC United from Everton

Former England and Manchester United captain moves to the MLS a year after returning to his boyhood club

England record goalscorer Wayne Rooney is to leave Everton for a move to Major League Soccer (MLS) team DC United, the US club and the Premier League outfit announced Thursday.

"Everton and Wayne Rooney have reached an agreement for the player to join MLS (Major League Soccer) side DC United on a permanent transfer," said a club statement.

"Rooney will complete the formalities of his move when the MLS transfer window opens on July 10.

"From everyone at Everton, we thank Wayne for his service to the club and wish him every success in the next three-and-a-half years with DC United."

The 32-year-old, a former England and Manchester United captain, re-joined boyhood club Everton before the start of last season following a long, trophy-filled career with league rivals United.

Everton had an inconsistent campaign but Rooney was the club's top scorer with 11 goals in 40 matches across all competitions last term as the Meryseyside outfit clinched an eighth-placed league finish.
