SUNDAY

Chelsea 4-0 Manchester United

Chelsea: Pedro 1’, Cahill 21’, Hazard 62’, Kante 70’

• Before the match, Jose Mourinho and John Terry could be seen greeting each other, smiling. That was the high point for Manchester United.

Chelsea rained all over any return parade Mourinho might have been hoping for, as Pedro scored 30 seconds in and the hosts did not let up from there, humiliating their former manager in a ruthless 4-0 rout at Stamford Bridge.

In a highly-anticipated match of two giants intent on returning to recent glory after down periods, it quickly proved entirely one-sided, as Pedro caught out David de Gea on a long ball from Marcos Alonso, rounding the United keeper near the top of the box and finishing into a wide-empty net.

Gary Cahill made clear what kind of day this was to be for Mourinho just 20 minutes later, drilling in Eden Hazard’s corner after it fell cleanly to him in front of a helpless De Gea.

Hazard himself got on the scoresheet just after the hour mark, cooly finishing to the right after some link-up play with N’Golo Kante and Nemanja Matic that a deflated United defence made entirely too easy.

To really rub salt on the wound, Kante dribbled into the box largely untroubled by Chris Smalling and scored the fourth from about ten yards out on 70 minutes.

Chelsea, after back-to-back losses at the end of last month, have now won three in a row and leapfrogged Tottenham into fourth on goal difference, one point off the lead pace set at the moment by Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool.

United have now gone without a win in the league in five of their last six.

Mourinho went over to have words with Chelsea manager Antonio Conte after the match. Reportedly he said, “Don’t do that to me at 4-0,” referring to Conte’s celebration after Kante’s final tally, “1-0 that’s okay, 4-0 is a humiliation.”

Well, he's not wrong. At least about the humiliation part.

Manchester City 1-1 Southampton

Man City: Iheanacho 55’; Southampton: Redmond 27’

• Nigeria starlet Kelechi Iheanacho saved a point for Man City at the Etihad Stadium, poking in an equaliser in the second half after Southampton had held the lead through Nathan Redmond’s first-half strike.

It was 20-year-old Iheanacho’s third league goal in seven appearances this season. It took him less than ten minutes to find net after coming on to start the second half for Kevin De Bruyne.

City went back top with the point, with a one-goal edge on Arsenal in goal difference and two on Liverpool.

SATURDAY

Liverpool 2-1 West Brom

Liverpool: Mane 20’, Coutinho 35’; West Brom: McAuley 81’

• Richard Jolly: Liverpool, a team capable of leading the league, with flaws that could unravel it all

Leicester City 3-1 Crystal Palace

Leicester: Musa 42’. Okazaki 63’, Fuchs 80’; Palace: Cabaye 85’

Leicester strikers Shinji Okazaki and Ahmed Musa ended lengthy goal droughts as the Premier League champions beat Crystal Palace 3-1 on Saturday.

Claudio Ranieri’s side were on course for their first win in four league matches after Nigeria international Musa claimed his first Leicester goal in his 10th appearance since a pre-season move from CSKA Moscow.

Japan forward Okazaki doubled Leicester’s lead in the second half at the King Power Stadium with his first goal in 14 league appearances.

Austrian defender Christian Fuchs sealed the points in the closing stages with his first goal for Leicester and Yohan Cabaye’s late reply was no consolation for Palace.

Leicester’s 20th home league game without defeat was the perfect birthday present for Ranieri, who turned 65 on Thursday, and it ensured they avoided making the worst start by reigning English champions since Leeds United in 1974.

While Leicester have made a spluttering opening in the Premier League, they have looked more like the team that unexpectedly won the title during a run of three successive Champions League victories, including their latest against FC Copenhagen this week.

Bournemouth 0-0 Tottenham

With a chance to go top Tottenham were pinned back on Saturday as Bournemouth held strong at home in a goalless draw.

The hosts, with a point, jumped into the top half of the table for their part, on 12 now. Tottenham, for the time being, went level with leaders Manchester City and Arsenal on 19 points.

The match was not without its contentious points. Four Spurs players were handed yellow cards in the first half, and Moussa Sissoko in particular was fortunate to get away with elbowing Harry Arter in the face.

Arsenal 0-0 Middlesbrough

• Arsenal were seeking an eighth successive win in all competitions but could not find the answer against an impressive Middlesbrough side who will rue not converting one of a number of clear chances.

Arsenal were a touch fortunate to gain even a point in a match where visitors Middlesbrough had arguably the better chances, especially in the first half, and Arsenal were indebted to the performance of goalkeeper Petr Cech. Middlesbrough came closest to breaking the deadlock when Gaston Ramirez curled a 21st-minute free-kick against the post.

Boro might have won it late on but it took a brilliant saving challenge from Koscielny to foil Negredo, who appeared to have broken clear.

Arsenal’s disappointing day was completed deep into stoppage time as Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s cross was turned into Middlesbrough’s goal by Mesut Ozil only for an offside flag to cut short the celebrations.

Burnley 2-1 Everton

Burnley: Vokes 39’, Arfield 90’; Everton: Bolasie 58’

• Canada international Scott Arfield’s 90th-minute winner earned Burnley an improbable 2-1 victory over a dominant Everton at Turf Moor on Saturday.

Everton impressed in a 1-1 draw with Manchester City last weekend and were looking to close to within a point of Pep Guardiola’s side in the Premier League table.

But after Yannick Bolasie had cancelled out Sam Vokes’s opener for Burnley, Arfield slid home at the death to lift Burnley three points clear of the relegation zone and prevent Everton breaking into the top four.

It was only a second win in seven league games for Sean Dyche’s Burnley as Ronald Koeman’s Everton registered a fourth successive match without victory.
