Jadon Sancho, Phil Foden and Harry Kane: How England will line-up at Euro 2020

The England national team has hit something of a purple patch.

Semi-finalists at the World Cup, and now semi-finalists in the Uefa Nations League. OK, the latter does not carry all that much weight when it comes to international football, but it shows Gareth Southgate and his squad are doing quite a lot right, having seen off World Cup finalists Croatia at the weekend.

This has given renewed hope that when the next major tournament comes around – Euro 2020 – England will be among the frontrunners, especially as the semi-final and final are being played on home turf at Wembley.

But as Southgate oversees the evolution of his team into a younger model, who is likely to be on the scene come 2020?

A few of his World Cup squad have already shifted out. Jamie Vardy and Gary Cahill have stepped down from international duty. Danny Rose and Ashley Young have been overtaken by younger full-backs, while Danny Welbeck is a long-term injury victim, Phil Jones is struggling at Manchester United and Adam Lallana, on the standby-list is a regular on the Liverpool bench.

The new season has brought a sprinkling of debuts – for the likes of Bounemouth's Callum Wilson, Jadon Sancho of Borussia Dortmund and Leicester's Ben Chilwell, who may have nailed down the left-back slot depending on what system England utilise.

And what does the future hold for Kieran Trippier, a hero at the World Cup but now among a tranche of talented right-backs? It's an usual area for England to be overloaded, and has echoes of their cricket team at the moment with world-class wicketkeeper-batsmen.

With more than a season and a half to go, expect more new names to emerge and others to fall away, so in the mean time see our predicted selection in the slideshow at the top.
