Barcelona manager Ernesto Valverde gets an one-year contract extension

Barcelona announced Friday it had extended the contract of its coach Ernesto Valverde for another season with the option of one more.

"In his first season he won both the league title and the Copa del Rey and in 2018/19 he has already added the Spanish Super Cup to that list," the club said in a statement.

The extension ties him to the club until the end of the 2020-21 season.

Barcelona are top of La Liga from arch-rivals Real Madrid by six points and in the last 16 of the Uefa Champions League with the first leg of that tie against Lyon taking place on Tuesday.

They are also still in the Copa del Rey, with their semi-final tie with Real level at 1-1 after the first leg, with the second leg in Madrid on February 27.
