Egypt's hopes of delivering Africa Cup of Nations success in front of an expectant home crowd were dashed on Saturday after the tournament hosts crashed out at the last-16 stage to South Africa.

With just five minutes remaining, Thembinkosi Lorch scored the only goal of the game at the Cairo International Stadium, and despite having superstar forward Mohamed Salah in their ranks, Egypt could not find a way past South Africa goalkeeper Ronwen Williams.

After a highly successful club season in which he won the Uefa Champions League with Liverpool, Salah could not inspire his national team to victory at the continental championship.
