Al Nassr are in negotiations with Cristiano Ronaldo over a new deal but face stiff competition from suitors across the globe, according to the club’s sporting director Fernando Hierro.
Ronaldo, 40, has been the face of Saudi Arabian football since arriving in Riyadh in January 2023, but speculation over his future has intensified after his cryptic social media message following Al Nassr’s final match of the season against Al Fateh.
“This chapter is over. The story? Still being written,” the five-time Ballon d’Or winner wrote, fuelling rumours he could move on.
“Ronaldo’s contract runs until June 30. We’re working to renew it so he can continue with us,” Hierro told reporters. “But of course, there are many clubs interested in signing him.”
Ronaldo topped the goal charts in the Saudi Pro League for a second successive season and, despite Al Nassr missing out on Club World Cup qualification, his presence continues to elevate the profile of Saudi football.
“Cristiano’s arrival was not just a signing – it was a national project,” Hierro said. “He opened up the Saudi league to the world. It’s phenomenal he had the courage to come, to stay, and to help us grow.”
Fifa President Gianni Infantino recently hinted that Ronaldo could yet feature in the 32-team Club World Cup in the US this summer, with the global body even creating a special transfer window for the tournament.
While Moroccan giants Wydad Casablanca had been linked with a surprise move for the Portuguese legend, sources close to the club denied any formal talks.
Whether Ronaldo’s story in Saudi Arabia continues remains to be seen – but Al Nassr are determined to ensure this chapter doesn’t close just yet.

How will Gen Alpha invest?
Mark Chahwan, co-founder and chief executive of robo-advisory firm Sarwa, forecasts that Generation Alpha (born between 2010 and 2024) will start investing in their teenage years and therefore benefit from compound interest.
“Technology and education should be the main drivers to make this happen, whether it’s investing in a few clicks or their schools/parents stepping up their personal finance education skills,” he adds.
Mr Chahwan says younger generations have a higher capacity to take on risk, but for some their appetite can be more cautious because they are investing for the first time. “Schools still do not teach personal finance and stock market investing, so a lot of the learning journey can feel daunting and intimidating,” he says.
He advises millennials to not always start with an aggressive portfolio even if they can afford to take risks. “We always advise to work your way up to your risk capacity, that way you experience volatility and get used to it. Given the higher risk capacity for the younger generations, stocks are a favourite,” says Mr Chahwan.
Highlighting the role technology has played in encouraging millennials and Gen Z to invest, he says: “They were often excluded, but with lower account minimums ... a customer with $1,000 [Dh3,672] in their account has their money working for them just as hard as the portfolio of a high get-worth individual.”
