SOUTHAMPTON RATINGS: Gavin Bazunu – 7/10: Called into action on a couple of occasions to keep the visitors at bay. Could not have done much for the goal, and did well to make some late stops to keep Southampton ahead and see out the clash. EPA

Mohammed Salisu – 7/10: Won the majority of his duels and had a decent evening. Was close to adding a third for the Saints, but saw his header cleared off the line. AFP

Romain Perraud – 6/10: Looked out of his depth when facing Sterling, but enjoyed himself when he got forward. AFP

Ibrahima Diallo 5/10: Did his defensive duties well, but perhaps did not stamp his authority on the match as much as he would have wanted. Gave away the ball too easily. Getty

Romeo Lavia 8/10: Dragged the hosts level with an excellent strike. Looked assured in the middle and did not put a foot wrong. Rightly received a standing ovation after he was substituted following an injury. EPA

Mohamed Elyounoussi 6/10: Did look threatening on occasion, but did not get involved in attacks enough. Game looked to have past him by. EPA

James Ward-Prowse 8/10: As per usual, was on the money with his set pieces. Utilised the threat of Armstrong and Elyounoussi well by frequently finding them in pockets of space. Reuters

Adam Armstrong 7/10: Took his goal well in what proved to be the winner. Gave Azpilicueta a working over for most of the game, but could be accused of being a tad wasteful on occasion. Getty

Che Adams 7/10: Used his physicality well to put himself about. The Chelsea backline looked unsure on how to keep the former Sheffield United striker quiet. Held the ball up well. EPA

Joe Aribo (Lavia 60'): Did his defensive duties well, especially nearing the end, with Chelsea pushing for an equaliser. EPA

Moussa Djenepo (Perraud 73’) 6/10: Came on with 20 minutes left, and helped the hosts hold on for the win. AFP

Lyanco (Armstrong 86’) N/A: Did not have enough time to impact the game. PA

CHELSEA RATINGS: Edouard Mendy 4/10: Another poor showing from the Chelsea shot-stopper. Stronger hand was needed to keep the equaliser at bay and did not look assured at all. Will be a concern for Thomas Tuchel. AFP

Cesar Azpilicueta 3/10: Given a horrible time by Adam Armstrong who tormented the Spaniard all night. Partially at fault for both goals and looked horribly exposed on a number of occasions. PA

Thiago Silva 5/10: Fairly solid, if unspectacular. Was not at fault for either goal, but slowed down any counter-attacking chances for Chelsea. AFP

Kalidou Koulibaly 3/10: Like Azpilicueta, was exposed often by the Saints. Got dragged in by Adams for the second and was too eager to commit throughout. Getty

Marc Cucurella 6/10: Defensively very good as he made several vital blocks, however, struggled when going forward. Chelsea will need a lot more from their full-backs when going forward as they were far too easy to deal with for the hosts. AP

Ruben Loftus-Cheek: 6/10 – Subbed off for Kovacic at half-time, due to injury. Did give away the ball on occasion but was certainly more assured in the middle than Jorginho and Mount in the first-half. Still looks to want one touch too many in promising positions. EPA

Jorginho – 3/10: Will be eager to forget his showing. Southampton’s midfield did a number on him, but he was also the master of his own demise at times, being almost comically careless in possession. Defensively was non-existent. Reuters

Mason Mount – 4/10: Looked busy without really threatening. Southampton did well to keep the Englishman quiet. Showed flashes of brilliance, but too few and far between. Reuters

Hakim Ziyech 5/10: Not really involved. Showed some quick thinking with inventive passes and touches but offered no threat. Reuters

Raheem Sterling – 7/10: The bright spark in a dire Chelsea showing. Fired the visitors ahead and was constantly looking a threat, despite some less than impressive service. Showed flashes of the Sterling at Manchester City. AP

Kai Havertz – 5/10: Should have scored, but headed over from close-range. Was subbed off soon after and looked sluggish throughout. Looked too easy to read and Southampton were happy to give him time on the ball, with his end product lacking. AFP

SUBS: Mateo Kovacic (Loftus-Cheek 45’) 6/10: Slotted in midfield nicely, but could not help Chelsea emerge victorious. AP

Christian Pulisic (Havertz 66’) 4/10: Somehow ended up at wing-back where he looked understandably lost. Invited pressure on the visitors just by being put in the position. Getty

Armando Broja (Azpilicueta 66’) 6/10: Did look a threat and almost equalised late on. Should be hoping for more minutes this season based on his cameo. Getty

Ben Chilwell (Jorginho 67’) 5/10: Came on with 23 minutes left, but his cameo was pretty forgettable for the most part. Getty

Chelsea's stuttering start to the Premier League season continued as they suffered a 2-1 defeat at Southampton on Tuesday despite Raheem Sterling giving them an early lead.

Sterling struck in the 23rd minute with his third goal in two games but Chelsea's lead was shortlived.

Romeo Lavia levelled five minutes later with a thumping finish from outside the area.

Adam Armstrong then turned the match on its head in first-half stoppage time - finishing superbly to round off a slick passing move by the hosts.

Chelsea, beaten at Leeds United in their previous away game, were unable to make much impression on a tireless Saints side in the second half despite plenty of possession.

Southampton's win moved them to seven points from five games, the same total as Thomas Tuchel's Chelsea.
