With six goals from six starts so far, Mohamed Salah has eased himself into Fiorentina and to Serie A in a way nobody in Tuscany thought possible when they signed the Egyptian on loan in January. As for signs of rustiness, after a year in which he featured very seldom from Chelsea, there have been none at all.
Slick swap
As Chelsea lick their wounds after elimination from the Uefa Champions League, questions about their strategy will inevitably arise. Might they have benefited more from a footballer with the sheer pace and finishing capacity of Salah, 22, whom they signed from FC Basel only in the new year of 2014? He has made way 12 months later essentially for Juan Cuadrado, the Colombian winger who was recruited for more than €30 million (Dh116.6m) from Fiorentina, with Salah going the other way on a two-year loan with an option to buy at €20m.
The Egyptian Messi
Because of his speed, and the fact he has become probably the active Egyptian international with the highest global profile, Salah sometimes is referred to as the “Egyptian Messi”. His impact in Florence has been Messiesque. The first of his two goals against Juventus in the Coppa Italia 10 days ago is a candidate for Italy’s best of the season. A run that started in his own half ended with a fine left foot shot and featured poor Juve defender Simone Padoin trailing further and further behind the smoothly accelerating Salah.
Big game temperament
Salah scored twice against Juventus in that 2-1 win in the first leg of the Coppa Italia semi-finals. It was Juve’s first home loss for nearly two years. The prestige of the opponent seems to motivate Salah. He also scored Fiorentina’s winner against Inter Milan in the league, and the goal, against Tottenham Hotspur that secured Fiorentina’s progress to the last 16 of the Europa League. In the same competition last Thursday, he set up the goal that earned them a 1-1 draw against Roma. Next up? Monday’s meeting with AC Milan.
Praise and plaudits
“To be honest, we weren’t anticipating he would make as much impact straight away,” said Vincenzo Montella, the head coach of Fiorentina, who are fifth in the Serie A table. “But we knew he was a strong player. He’s quite like Cuadrado, but he provides more goals.” Salah already has as many for his new club as Cuadrado scored for Fiorentina in all competitions between August and February.
