Sebastian Vettel won the Bahrain Grand Prix for the third time in his career as he held off a late charge from Lewis Hamilton.

The Ferrari driver had moved to the front during the first round of pit stops, and he controlled the race from there on to pick up his second win of the season and move seven points clear of Hamilton at the top of the standings after the pair had gone into the race level.

Hamilton finished ahead of Mercedes-GP teammate Valtteri Bottas, who had started on pole, while the second Ferrari of Kimi Raikkonen was fourth after recovering from a slow start.

Daniel Ricciardo was fifth for Red Bull Racing as his teammate Max Verstappen crashed out after suffering brake failure.

Felipe Massa was sixth for Williams, with Sergio Perez seventh for Force India and Romain Grosjean eighth for Haas.

The next round of the season is the Russian Grand Prix in Sochi on April 30.
