Aaqib Javed, the bowling coach of the Pakistan team currently in the UAE for the series against England, has been shortlisted as the UAE coach to replace Kabir Khan.
"We have made him an offer but he has yet to give an answer, which is understandable because he is focused on Pakistan's series against England," said Dilawar Mani, the chief executive officer of the Emirates Cricket Board.
"Since everyone knows Kabir is leaving, we have received a lot of applications. We have also short-listed a few names and Aaqib is one of them. For us, he would be the ideal candidate from the list we have.
"We have given him time until the series against England is over and, should he decide to join us, then he would be our first choice."
The 39-year-old medium-fast bowler has played 22 Tests and 163 ODIs for Pakistan, claiming 54 and 182 wickets respectively in the two formats of the game.
He was a member of the World Cup-winning team in 1992 and played alongside the Pakistan bowling legends Wasim Akram and Waqar Younus.
Kabir will be leaving after the UAE's home matches against Scotland in the ICC Intercontinental Cup from February 16 March 9. Kabir will rejoin Afghanistan as their coach after a one-year spell with the UAE.

Trans fat is typically found in fried and baked goods, but you may be consuming more than you think.
Powdered coffee creamer, microwave popcorn and virtually anything processed with a crust is likely to contain it, as this guide from Mayo Clinic outlines:
Baked goods - Most cakes, cookies, pie crusts and crackers contain shortening, which is usually made from partially hydrogenated vegetable oil. Ready-made frosting is another source of trans fat.
Snacks - Potato, corn and tortilla chips often contain trans fat. And while popcorn can be a healthy snack, many types of packaged or microwave popcorn use trans fat to help cook or flavour the popcorn.
Fried food - Foods that require deep frying — french fries, doughnuts and fried chicken — can contain trans fat from the oil used in the cooking process.
Refrigerator dough - Products such as canned biscuits and cinnamon rolls often contain trans fat, as do frozen pizza crusts.
Creamer and margarine - Nondairy coffee creamer and stick margarines also may contain partially hydrogenated vegetable oils.
