The latest: Novak Djokovic d Malek Jaziri 6-1, 6-2
Tomas Berdych d Thomas Fabbiano 6-2, 6-2 & Feliciano Lopez d Lukas Rosol 6-3, 7-6
Tomas Berdych is through to the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships quarter-finals after a comfortable 6-2, 6-2 win over qualifier Thomas Fabbiano.
Berdych, a two-time finalist in Dubai, had too much power for his Italian opponent, and a pair of breaks in each set proved enough for the No 3 seed to close out the match in one hour and 14 minutes.
Earlier on Court 3, Feliciano Lopez will await the winner of Novak Djokovic’s second round match with Malek Jaziri after the No 6 seed defeated Lukas Rosol 6-3, 7-6.
A solitary break in the first set was midway through the first set was all Lopez needed, with the Spaniard’s serve proving impenetrable.
After earning a late break and a chance to serve for the match at 6-5 in the second set, Lopez’s serve faltered, but after coming from behind in the tie-break, he ground out the victory to take his place in the last eight.
Over on Court 1, 2015 semi-finalist, Borna Coric, was eliminated in the second round by No 8 seed Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-2, 7-6.
Germany’s Kohlshcreiber will next face the winner of Stan Wawrinka’s match against Franko Skugor for a place in the semi-finals.
Roberto Bautista Agut d Hyeon Chung 6-0, 6-1 & Marcos Baghdatis d Vasek Pospisil 6-4, 6-2
Roberto Bautista Agut, the fourth seed, blew South Korean teenager Hyeon Chung off the courts for a 6-0, 6-1 win, needing a mere 53 minutes to book his place in the last eight.
Bautista Agut, who has started the season with titles in Auckland and Sofia, needed only 28 minutes to wrap up the first set, breaking the bespectacled Korean three times. Chung finally held his serve in the fourth game of the second set, but that was the only game he won in the entire match.
Bautista Agut’s quarter-final opponent will be Marcos Baghdatis, who brushed aside Vasek Pospisil 6-4, 6-2.
The Cyrpriot world No 57, who knocked out 5th seed Viktor Troicki in the opening round, broke Pospisil in the ninth game to clinch the first set, and then bolted off the gates in the second, breaking the Canadian twice for a 3-0 lead before wrapping up the match in 65 minutes.
