DUBAI // Following her first win over a top-10 player on Wednesday, Catherine Bellis had accepted “it’s not always going to be as happy-go-lucky” for her on the WTA Tour. On Thursday, the American teenager’s prophecy was proved right.
Caroline Wozniacki, a former world No 1 and teen prodigy herself, gave Bellis, 17, a chastising lesson in elite tennis, reeling off nine games on the trot to turn the tables on her opponent and secure a sixth consecutive semi-final appearance in the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships with a 6-3, 6-2 win.
“She’s such a great player,” said Bellis, who had stunned world No 6 Agnieszka Radwanska the previous night to earn a showdown with Wozniacki. “It was really fun for me to see what the highest level is.

“I know I did yesterday, but to see it again. Maybe it wasn’t my best tennis, but I think she definitely played really well. Definitely just another learning experience for me and a really good one.”
Bellis had made the better start and was a break up, leading 3-1 before Wozniacki turned it around, reeling off five games in succession to take the first set. The Dane, ranked No 15 in the world, then won the first four games of the second set before Bellis finally broke that nine-game run, holding serve on her third attempt in the set. The fate of the match, however, was sealed by then.
“That just shows at the highest level that they can do that and just come back and really run away with a match like that,” said Bellis, who did not really help her cause by committing 33 unforced errors. Wozniacki, by comparison, had 15.
“I stepped into the court a little bit after being down 3-1 and just tried to keep the pressure on her, make her think a little bit, not give her too many free points,” said Wozniacki, who meets Anastasija Sevastova in today’s first semi-final. “It worked out.”
A top-five-ranked player before her 20th birthday and No 1 just a few months later, Wozniacki knows from past experience what it is like to be in Bellis’s situation.
“Well, I have been there myself,” said Wozniacki, the 2011 Dubai champion. “So I just try to put myself in her shoes. For me, it was just very important to stay strong and not show any negative emotions, but just stay positive all the time, show that I have the presence on court and really make her play those extra balls and points.
“She would really have to play on a really high level to beat me, because I was going to give that extra ball back. I wasn’t going to just give it to her.”
Bellis was not able to play at that “really high level” but Wozniacki is convinced a bright future lies ahead for the American, whose next stop is the Indian Wells tournament.
“I think she has a great game,” Wozniacki said. “She takes the ball on the rise. She’s pretty quick on her feet, and I think that will bring her far.
“She’s definitely going to gain experience over the next couple of years. This year, for her, I think, is going to be easier than next year because she has no pressure. Everything that she wins is going to be a plus.
“Next year, having to defend that and people starting to know her, will be a little tougher, but I have no doubt that she’s going to come up out and just get better from that.
“She seems like a hard worker. I’m excited to see what the future holds for her.”

UN Panel of Experts found regime secretly sold a fifth of the country's gold reserves.
The panel’s 2017 report followed a trail to West Africa where large sums of cash and gold were hidden by Abdullah Al Senussi, Qaddafi’s former intelligence chief, in 2011.
Cases filled with cash that was said to amount to $560m in 100 dollar notes, that was kept by a group of Libyans in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.
A second stash was said to have been held in Accra, Ghana, inside boxes at the local offices of an international human rights organisation based in France.

SUNDERLAND 2002-03
No one has ended a Premier League season quite like Sunderland. They lost each of their final 15 games, taking no points after January. They ended up with 19 in total, sacking managers Peter Reid and Howard Wilkinson and losing 3-1 to Charlton when they scored three own goals in eight minutes.

Until Derby came along, Sunderland’s total of 15 points was the Premier League’s record low. They made it until May and their final home game before winning at the Stadium of Light while they lost a joint record 29 of their 38 league games.
HUDDERSFIELD 2018-19

Pharaoh's curse
British aristocrat Lord Carnarvon, who funded the expedition to find the Tutankhamun tomb, died in a Cairo hotel four months after the crypt was opened.
He had been in poor health for many years after a car crash, and a mosquito bite made worse by a shaving cut led to blood poisoning and pneumonia.
Reports at the time said Lord Carnarvon suffered from “pain as the inflammation affected the nasal passages and eyes”.
Decades later, scientists contended he had died of aspergillosis after inhaling spores of the fungus aspergillus in the tomb, which can lie dormant for months. The fact several others who entered were also found dead withiin a short time led to the myth of the curse.

Male residents employed in the UAE can sponsor immediate family members, such as wife and children, subject to conditions that include a minimum salary of Dh 4,000 or Dh 3,000 plus accommodation.
Attested original marriage certificate, birth certificate of the child, ejari or rental contract, labour contract, salary certificate must be submitted to the government authorised typing centre to complete the sponsorship process
In Abu Dhabi, a woman can sponsor her husband and children if she holds a residence permit stating she is an engineer, teacher, doctor, nurse or any profession related to the medical sector and her monthly salary is at least Dh 10,000 or Dh 8,000 plus accommodation.
In Dubai, if a woman is not employed in the above categories she can get approval to sponsor her family if her monthly salary is more than Dh 10,000 and with a special permission from the Department of Naturalization and Residency Dubai.
To sponsor parents, a worker should earn Dh20,000 or Dh19,000 a month, plus a two-bedroom accommodation

UK's plans to cut net migration
Under the UK government’s proposals, migrants will have to spend 10 years in the UK before being able to apply for citizenship.
Skilled worker visas will require a university degree, and there will be tighter restrictions on recruitment for jobs with skills shortages.
But what are described as "high-contributing" individuals such as doctors and nurses could be fast-tracked through the system.
Language requirements will be increased for all immigration routes to ensure a higher level of English.
Rules will also be laid out for adult dependants, meaning they will have to demonstrate a basic understanding of the language.
The plans also call for stricter tests for colleges and universities offering places to foreign students and a reduction in the time graduates can remain in the UK after their studies from two years to 18 months.
HAEMOGLOBIN DISORDERS EXPLAINED
Thalassaemia is part of a family of genetic conditions affecting the blood known as haemoglobin disorders.
Haemoglobin is a substance in the red blood cells that carries oxygen and a lack of it triggers anemia, leaving patients very weak, short of breath and pale.
The most severe type of the condition is typically inherited when both parents are carriers. Those patients often require regular blood transfusions - about 450 of the UAE's 2,000 thalassaemia patients - though frequent transfusions can lead to too much iron in the body and heart and liver problems.
The condition mainly affects people of Mediterranean, South Asian, South-East Asian and Middle Eastern origin. Saudi Arabia recorded 45,892 cases of carriers between 2004 and 2014.
A World Health Organisation study estimated that globally there are at least 950,000 'new carrier couples' every year and annually there are 1.33 million at-risk pregnancies.
