Cristiano Ronaldo scored his 500th career goal on Wednesday. The man is unbelievable, a killer in front of goal, a machine. His goal ratio of more than one a game for Real Madrid is incredible. He will overtake Raul as Real Madrid's greatest-ever goalscorer soon, too, despite having played over 400 fewer games. But I am not surprised.
I have played with him and watched him go in search of perfection when we were at Manchester United together. Many times after training it was just the two of us left practising shooting. Practice makes perfect and he wanted to be the best and everyone knew that. But he was highly motivated, a decent person too. I am pleased at what he has gone on to achieve.
We both left Manchester for Spain and if you look at the list of the top scorers in Spain over the past seven years then you will see the following names at the top. Ronaldo, Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Messi, Ronaldo, Messi and then me. In 2009, I won the Pichichi, the award for Spain’s top scorer, for the second time with 32 league goals in 33 games. It was the most anyone had scored in Spain since the Brazilian Ronaldo in 1997. Christian Vieiri, Raul, Salva Ballesta, Diego Tristan, Roy Makaay, the Brazilian Ronaldo and Samuel Eto’o are just a few of the names that had previously won it. I was in very good company.
If you look at the list of the top scorers in Europe from all the major leagues, you will see the following names going back over the past seven years: Ronaldo, Ronaldo, Luis Suarez, Messi, Messi, Ronaldo, Messi and then me, in 2009. That was my second European Golden Boot, four years after my first.
I am not saying that I am at the same level as Messi or Ronaldo. They are the best two players in the world, but I am very proud that I managed to finish above them in the goalscoring charts, especially as I was playing for Atletico Madrid, not Barcelona or Real Madrid.
My 32 goals in 33 games were a huge amount, in any season. But every Pichichi winner since then has averaged more than a goal per game. That is Messi and Ronaldo, two magnificent footballers who need each other, who drive each other on. Competition keeps you young, it motivates you, it challenges your ego. Messi and Ronaldo have this with each other.
I do not like to say that they are the best players ever. That is subjective and you do not need to compare players from different eras. In any case, they have not won the World Cup like Diego Maradona or Pele did, and the World Cup is still the best tournament in the world. But they are the best of their generation.
Ronaldo has changed as a player. When he was younger, he was more like Messi. He liked to dribble and do fancy things. Now he is more direct, a killer who scores a lot more goals. The pair are driven by goals, but Messi still has something that Ronaldo does not. Messi is more likely to produce magic, to make a difference in a game, to get out of a spot when surrounded by four players. It is harder for Ronaldo to do that. He is bigger, he needs more space to go one-on-one with a defender, to allow him to beat them for pace. Earlier in his career, he used to dribble more like Messi does. Now, he dribbles less, yet makes and scores more goals. Maybe Ronaldo needs a teammate to help change a game, but Messi can do it alone.
Ronaldo can score every type of goal. He can use both feet, his head, take free kicks, finish from close range or outside the box. He has everything.
I do not buy into the argument that it is easier to score in Spain, either. The Spanish league has the best teams, as is shown by how well they do in European competitions. Is anyone telling me the best teams are the easiest to score against?
Ronaldo will go on and on. He has the physique, the talent, the motivation. He also has Messi to keep driving him. They have been playing against each other for years and they will be up against each other for many more.
I think Messi is slightly better, but others disagree. And do not believe it when you hear a Barca or Madrid player say Messi or Ronaldo is the best, they are obligated to say their teammate.
We are just lucky to be able to watch Ronaldo and Messi at their best. Enjoy them while they last, they are special talents.
I would like to get back among them in the goalscorers’ chart again, but I’m 36 now, so maybe that will be a little tough. I am just pleased that I was once among them.

Mercer, the investment consulting arm of US services company Marsh & McLennan, expects its wealth division to at least double its assets under management (AUM) in the Middle East as wealth in the region continues to grow despite economic headwinds, a company official said.
Mercer Wealth, which globally has $160 billion in AUM, plans to boost its AUM in the region to $2-$3bn in the next 2-3 years from the present $1bn, said Yasir AbuShaban, a Dubai-based principal with Mercer Wealth.
“Within the next two to three years, we are looking at reaching $2 to $3 billion as a conservative estimate and we do see an opportunity to do so,” said Mr AbuShaban.
Mercer does not directly make investments, but allocates clients’ money they have discretion to, to professional asset managers. They also provide advice to clients.
“We have buying power. We can negotiate on their (client’s) behalf with asset managers to provide them lower fees than they otherwise would have to get on their own,” he added.
Mercer Wealth’s clients include sovereign wealth funds, family offices, and insurance companies among others.
From its office in Dubai, Mercer also looks after Africa, India and Turkey, where they also see opportunity for growth.
Wealth creation in Middle East and Africa (MEA) grew 8.5 per cent to $8.1 trillion last year from $7.5tn in 2015, higher than last year’s global average of 6 per cent and the second-highest growth in a region after Asia-Pacific which grew 9.9 per cent, according to consultancy Boston Consulting Group (BCG). In the region, where wealth grew just 1.9 per cent in 2015 compared with 2014, a pickup in oil prices has helped in wealth generation.
BCG is forecasting MEA wealth will rise to $12tn by 2021, growing at an annual average of 8 per cent.
Drivers of wealth generation in the region will be split evenly between new wealth creation and growth of performance of existing assets, according to BCG.
Another general trend in the region is clients’ looking for a comprehensive approach to investing, according to Mr AbuShaban.
“Institutional investors or some of the families are seeing a slowdown in the available capital they have to invest and in that sense they are looking at optimizing the way they manage their portfolios and making sure they are not investing haphazardly and different parts of their investment are working together,” said Mr AbuShaban.
Some clients also have a higher appetite for risk, given the low interest-rate environment that does not provide enough yield for some institutional investors. These clients are keen to invest in illiquid assets, such as private equity and infrastructure.
“What we have seen is a desire for higher returns in what has been a low-return environment specifically in various fixed income or bonds,” he said.
“In this environment, we have seen a de facto increase in the risk that clients are taking in things like illiquid investments, private equity investments, infrastructure and private debt, those kind of investments were higher illiquidity results in incrementally higher returns.”
The Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, one of the largest sovereign wealth funds, said in its 2016 report that has gradually increased its exposure in direct private equity and private credit transactions, mainly in Asian markets and especially in China and India. The authority’s private equity department focused on structured equities owing to “their defensive characteristics.”

Fourth Arab Economic and Social Development Summit
As he spoke, Mr Aboul Gheit repeatedly referred to the need to tackle issues affecting the welfare of people across the region both in terms of preventing conflict and in pushing development.
Lebanon is scheduled to host the fourth Arab Economic and Social Development Summit in January that will see regional leaders gather to tackle the challenges facing the Middle East. The last such summit was held in 2013. Assistant Secretary-General Hossam Zaki told The National that the Beirut Summit “will be an opportunity for Arab leaders to discuss solely economic and social issues, the conference will not focus on political concerns such as Palestine, Syria or Libya". He added that its slogan will be “the individual is at the heart of development”, adding that it will focus on all elements of human capital.

December 11: 'My husband died, so what happens to the Dh240,000 he owes in the UAE?'
JL, a housewife from India, wrote to us about her husband, who died earlier this month. He left behind an outstanding loan of Dh240,000 and she was hoping to pay it off with an insurance policy he had taken out. She also wanted to recover some of her husband’s end-of-service liabilities to help support her and her son.
“I have no words to thank you for helping me out,” she wrote to The Debt Panel after receiving the panellists' comments. “The advice has given me an idea of the present status of the loan and how to take it up further. I will draft a letter and send it to the email ID on the bank’s website along with the death certificate. I hope and pray to find a way out of this.”
November 26: ‘I owe Dh100,000 because my employer has not paid me for a year’
SL, a financial services employee from India, left the UAE in June after quitting his job because his employer had not paid him since November 2018. He owes Dh103,800 on four debts and was told by the panellists he may be able to use the insolvency law to solve his issue.
SL thanked the panellists for their efforts. "Indeed, I have some clarity on the consequence of the case and the next steps to take regarding my situation," he says. "Hopefully, I will be able to provide a positive testimony soon."
October 15: 'I lost my job and left the UAE owing Dh71,000. Can I return?'
MS, an energy sector employee from South Africa, left the UAE in August after losing his Dh12,000 job. He was struggling to meet the repayments while securing a new position in the UAE and feared he would be detained if he returned. He has now secured a new job and will return to the Emirates this month.
“The insolvency law is indeed a relief to hear,” he says. "I will not apply for insolvency at this stage. I have been able to pay something towards my loan and credit card. As it stands, I only have a one-month deficit, which I will be able to recover by the end of December."

The Al Burda Festival is a celebration of Islamic art and culture, featuring talks, performances and exhibitions. Organised by the Ministry of Culture and Knowledge Development, this one-day event opens with a session on the future of Islamic art. With this in mind, it is followed by a number of workshops and “masterclass” sessions in everything from calligraphy and typography to geometry and the origins of Islamic design. There will also be discussions on subjects including ‘Who is the Audience for Islamic Art?’ and ‘New Markets for Islamic Design.’ A live performance from Kuwaiti guitarist Yousif Yaseen should be one of the highlights of the day.
