MONZA, ITALY // Sebastian Vettel may continue his charade of refusing to accept he has secured a second successive world championship, but his tears betrayed his words.
The German driver openly wept as he stood on the podium at Autodromo Nazionale di Monza Sunday.
The reason was more likely courtesy of the fact he was back on the step where he had been presented with his first grand prix winners' trophy four years ago, but even he - a 24 year old who claims to never look at the drivers' standings - must have known the significance of the victory on his Red Bull Racing team's bogey track.
Vettel sped past the chequered flag 9.5 seconds before Jenson Button's McLaren-Mercedes, while Fernando Alonso of Ferrari finished third to provide the fervent home support with something to cheer.
The result means that Vettel now leads the world championship by 112 points with six races remaining. A podium in Singapore could seal the deal, depending on the finishing positions of the other title contenders.
Vettel has maintained he does not care for the world championship standings yet and just wants to win races. When he was informed of the inevitability of his crowning, he simply replied: "Wow."
When he continued, his predictable prattle returned: "Nice to win", "I think we have put ourselves in a very good position", "We'll just do Singapore as we did all the other races" and "Go there and take it step-by-step".
Vettel's victory in Monza was his eighth win from 13 races this season and, initially at least, he had to fight for it.
Having started on pole - for the 10th time this year - he lost his lead to an impressive Alonso before the first turn, but when a high-speed shunt involving Hispania's Vitantonio Liuzzi took out several drivers and also produced the safety car, he was able to position himself and produce an audacious pass to regain his lead.
From that moment on the victory was never in doubt.
"Very emotional," Vettel said. "This circuit means a lot to me and has been very special.
"Obviously, I got my first win here [with Toro Rosso in 2008], so when I crossed the line I remembered every single bit."
Alonso is now Vettel's nearest competitor in the driver's standings, but even he has conceded the ultimate race is over.
"Yeah, six races to go, obviously the championship is impossible, not mathematically, but we are no longer in contention, so we try to enjoy every race, we try to go for individual victories," he said.
"Also fighting for second place in the championship because it's always better to finish second than fifth."
Vettel, sitting next to Alonso, refused to agree.
"I allow myself to say we are in a great position, and if you ask any driver they would like to change positions," he said. "But it's not over until it's over."
The stark reality is Vettel could fail to finish every race from now until the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on November 14 and still arrive at Yas Marina at the top of the drivers' standings.

Employment lawyer Meriel Schindler of Withers Worldwide shares her tips on achieving equal pay
Do your homework
Make sure that you are being offered a fair salary. There is lots of industry data available, and you can always talk to people who have come out of the organisation. Where I see people coming a cropper is where they haven’t done their homework.
Don’t be afraid to negotiate
It’s quite standard to negotiate if you think an offer is on the low side. The job is unlikely to be withdrawn if you ask for money, and if that did happen I’d question whether you want to work for an employer who is so hypersensitive.
Know your worth
Women tend to be a bit more reticent to talk about their achievements. In my experience they need to have more confidence in their own abilities – men will big up what they’ve done to get a pay rise, and to compete women need to turn up the volume.
Work together
If you suspect men in your organisation are being paid more, look your boss in the eye and say, “I want you to assure me that I’m paid equivalent to my peers”. If you’re not getting a straight answer, talk to your peer group and consider taking direct action to fix inequality.
Key figures in the life of the fort
Sheikh Dhiyab bin Isa (ruled 1761-1793) Built Qasr Al Hosn as a watchtower to guard over the only freshwater well on Abu Dhabi island.
Sheikh Shakhbut bin Dhiyab (ruled 1793-1816) Expanded the tower into a small fort and transferred his ruling place of residence from Liwa Oasis to the fort on the island.
Sheikh Tahnoon bin Shakhbut (ruled 1818-1833) Expanded Qasr Al Hosn further as Abu Dhabi grew from a small village of palm huts to a town of more than 5,000 inhabitants.
Sheikh Khalifa bin Shakhbut (ruled 1833-1845) Repaired and fortified the fort.
Sheikh Saeed bin Tahnoon (ruled 1845-1855) Turned Qasr Al Hosn into a strong two-storied structure.
Sheikh Zayed bin Khalifa (ruled 1855-1909) Expanded Qasr Al Hosn further to reflect the emirate's increasing prominence.
Sheikh Shakhbut bin Sultan (ruled 1928-1966) Renovated and enlarged Qasr Al Hosn, adding a decorative arch and two new villas.
Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan (ruled 1966-2004) Moved the royal residence to Al Manhal palace and kept his diwan at Qasr Al Hosn.
