Chirag Suri and Basil Hameed hit sparkling half-centuries as UAE claimed their first victory in the World Cup League 2.

The national team beat Scotland by seven wickets in the final match of the tri-series at the ICC Academy in Dubai.

Suri top scored with 67 to lay the platform for the home side’s successful pursuit of 221.

It marked quite the comeback, after the Scotland openers had made a formidable start after being invited to bat first.

Kyle Coetzer and Matthew Cross put on 138 for the first wicket. Once they were parted, though, Scotland slumped.

Rohan Mustafa took 3-35, Junaid Siddique 3-49, and 18-year-old leg-spinner Karthik Meiyappan 2-39 as Scotland were bowled out for 220.

Suri led the way in reply, as he made 67 at the top of the innings.

Not long ago, Suri was the youngest player in the side by quite some margin. As is an indicator of the vast overhaul the national team has undergone, he now counts among the more experienced players in the side.

The XI against Scotland included three university students – Meiyappan, Jonathan Figy and Darius D’Silva – as well as the schoolboy wicketkeeper, Vriitya Aravind.

Hameed, another newcomer to the side, also excelled. The 26-year-old right-hander from Kerala made 63 not out as UAE sealed the win with 6.1 overs remaining.
