Couture and Pavelski score as Sharks move to 6-0

San Jose avenged an early hit to Dan Boyle that sent the defenceman to the hospital and continued a perfect start to the season with a 6-2 win over St Louis.

Sharks 6, Blues 2

San Jose improved their record to 6-0 and won a battle between undefeated teams with a victory that included power play goals from Logan Couture, Joe Pavelski, Tommy Wingels and Patrick Marleau.

The Sharks might have been fired up by a hit by the Blues’ Maxim Lapierre on veteran defenceman Dan Boyle just 5:22 into the game.

Lapierre checked Boyle into the boards from behind and Boyle had to be taken off the ice on a stretcher.

He was taken to a hospital for evaluation, and initial reports were that he was alert and moving all of his extremities.

Canadiens 3, Jets 0

The Montreal Canadiens scored twice in the first period and held on to beat the Winnipeg Jets, taking three of four games on a road trip through western Canada.

Left winger Brandon Prust and blueliner PK Subban each scored their second goals of the season, while Daniel Briere scored into an empty net with just over a minute left in the game.

Predators 4, Panthers 3

Taking advantage of a defensively challenged opponent, Nashville got their offence going with a season-high four goals and a win over the Panthers.

Shea Weber, Mike Fisher, Craig Smith and Patric Hornqvist all netted as the Predators earned their third win in four games.

Red Wings 2, Blue Jackets 1

Jonas Gustavsson made 36 saves including a spectacular one to preserve the lead with 5:20 left as the Detroit Red Wings held on for a win over the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Daniel Alfredsson scored his first goal as a Red Wing and Todd Bertuzzi also scored for Detroit.

Cam Atkinson scored for Columbus

Sabres 4, Islanders 3 (SO)

Thomas Vanek and Tyler Ennis scored in the shootout as the Buffalo Sabres earned their first win of the season by edging the New York Islanders.

The Sabres (1-6-1) scored more than two goals for the first time this season and avoided the worst start in franchise history. Buffalo have never been winless through eight games.

Sabres goaltender Ryan Miller made two stops in the shootout and finished with 42 saves.

Lightning 5, Kings 1

Ben Bishop made 30 saves and Martin St Louis had two goals and an assist as the Tampa Bay Lightning beat the Los Angeles Kings.

Bishop won his fourth straight start and lowered his goals-against average to 1.46 in that span.

Tampa Bay improved to 4-2 while the Kings dropped to 4-3 while having their three-game win streak stopped.

Blackhawks 3, Hurricanes 2 (SO)

Patrick Sharp scored the lone goal of a shootout and the Chicago Blackhawks defeated the Carolina Hurricanes to win their third game in a row.

The Hurricanes wiped out a two-goal, third-period deficit to force overtime as Alexander Semin got them on the board before Ron Hainsey’s blast from inside the blue line tied the game with 7:27 to play in regulation.

Sharp and Marian Hossa scored first-period goals for the Blackhawks.

Maple Leafs 4, Wild 1

Mason Raymond scored two goals and James Reimer stopped 37 shots as the Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the Minnesota Wild for their third win in a row.

Tyler Bozak and Trevor Smith also scored, and Cody Franson and Morgan Rielly added two assists apiece for the Maple Leafs (6-1-0).

Penguins 3, Oilers 2

Sidney Crosby took over the scoring lead with a three-assist night in leading the Pittsburgh Penguins past the slumping Edmonton Oilers.

Crosby now has 12 points in six games this season along with a six-game point streak.

Evgeni Malkin broke a 2-2 tie with his winning goal at 7:20 in the third.

Canucks 3, Flyers 2

Ryan Kesler scored his second goal of the game with 2:25 left in the third period to lift the Vancouver Canucks to a victory over the struggling Philadelphia Flyers.

With his team trailing 2-1, Chris Higgins got the tying goal for Vancouver 7:31 into the third and the Canucks (4-3) sent the Flyers to their sixth loss in seven games.

Tye McGinn had both of Philadelphia’s goals.
