SANTIAGO // On an historic night in Santiago, Chile claimed their first ever competitive victory over Argentina with a 1-0 win. The Argentina manager Alfio Basile had no excuses for his side's display. Fabian Orellana scored the game's only goal in the 35th minute and Basile said: "They were clearly superior all over the pitch. They pressured well in midfield and we never found the way to create good passing moves.
"I have never seen Chile playing so well. In the first half they seemed to play with five players more than us." Chile coach Marcelo Bielsa, who spent six years as Argentina coach from 1998 until 2004, was full of praise for his team. "It was a just triumph," he said. "All the players were in top form. "The players gave a huge effort and this victory is to their merit.Defeating Argentina is a very important feat for Chilean football and was a crucial step in our fight for qualification."
Brazil coach Dunga insists there is no need for panic after his side were held to a disappointing goalless draw at home to Colombia "People forget that we are in second place," said Dunga. "Yes, we are trying to come through a crisis but it seems that people think Brazil are bottom of the group." Forward Robinho, who hobbled off in the 63rd minute giving Manchester City cause for concern, said: "The fans have a right [to boo]. I had an awful match. In fact, all the team played bad. But it is also true that the Colombians committed many fouls and did not allow us to play."
