Borussia Dortmund’s director of sport Michael Zorc says his club are still aiming for a top-three finish this season, despite losing several key players over the summer.

Mats Hummels, Ilkay Gundogan and Henrikh Mkhitaryan have all left the Westphalians, but Dortmund are still setting their sights high.

“We want to do the best we possibly can and that has not changed a lot,” Zorc, whose club have brought in Euro 2016 winner Raphael Guerreiro, Emre Mor, Marc Bartra, Ousmane Dembele and Sebastian Rode, told Sport1 television.

“In each competition we are in, we want to go as far as possible.

"Borussia Dortmund are always going to be a club who sees themselves in the Champions League."

Dortmund return to the Uefa Champions League this coming season after missing out on qualification a year ago, and they will be keen to do as well as they did in 2013 when they were beaten by Bundesliga rivals Bayern Munich in the final.

Further investment may be necessary, with Mario Gotze tipped to return from Bayern, but Zorc has defended his club’s transfer policy so far this summer.

“With the players who have left, we had to consider whether we should sell them now or let them go on a free next year,” Zorc said.

“We decided to let them go now, but we’ve brought in a couple of exciting players.”
