Bonds should keep record: Aaron

Hank Aaron, who hit 755 home runs in his Major league career believes the man who surpassed that feat should be allowed to keep that record.

Baseball legend Hank Aaron believes that the under-fire slugger Barry Bonds should be allowed to keep the home run record in Major League Baseball. Bonds, baseball's all-time home leader, is currently on trial for perjury after prosecutors said a urine test supplied by Bonds also tested positive for performance-enhancing substances in 2003, which was part of an anonymous programme that baseball conducted in 2003. He is charged with lying to a grand jury and could face up to two years in prison if convicted. Bonds belted 28 home runs for the San Francisco Giants in 2007 to pass Aaron for first place on the all-time list. However, despite the speculation of steroid use, Aaron believes the record should stand. "In all fairness to everybody, I just don't see how you really can do a thing like that and just say somebody isn't the record holder anymore, and let's go back to the way that it was," Aaron told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "If you did that, you'd have to go back and change all kinds of records, and the (home run) record was very important to me. "It's probably the most hallowed record out there, as far as I'm concerned, but it's now in the hands of somebody else. It belongs to Barry. "No matter how we look at it, it's his record, and I held it for a long time. But my take on all of this has always been the same. I'm not going to say that Barry's got it because of this or because of that, because I don't know." Earlier it was revealed that Bonds' mistress, his personal shopper, a former teammate and Jason Giambi are among the key witnesses expected to testify against baseball's all-time home run king in his perjury trial next month. *PA Sport
