Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger on Thursday downplayed Chilean star Alexis Sanchez’s moody behaviour during and after the 3-3 Premier League draw with Bournemouth saying it was natural at his being frustrated.
The 28-year-old forward – who is holding off from signing a new contract – had a heated discussion with midfielder Aaron Ramsey during Tuesday’s game and then flung his gloves to the ground and stormed off down the tunnel after the London club had come back from 3-0 down.
Several newspapers reported on Thursday that Sanchez – who scored Arsenal’s opening goal – had then refused to speak to his teammates and sat sulking in the dressing-room.
“Well, what is surprising there?,” Wenger said, responding to a question about Sanchez’s negative body language. “You want to win the games and when you don’t win, you are unhappy – it is normal.
“Without passion, you do not come back after 70 minutes from three goals down in the Premier League.
“First of all it is exceptional, it doesn’t often happen in the Premier League and you need a special response, which is what happened.
“We wanted to win the game, and we didn’t win the game so we are all frustrated. Of course [he is fine],” added the Frenchman, whose side are fifth in the table eight points adrift of leaders Chelsea.
Sanchez at least has a weekend off as Wenger said he would rest him and German midfielder Mesut Ozil, who is also holding off on signing a new contract, for the third round FA Cup tie with second tier Preston North End.
Meanwhile, midfielder Francis Coquelin will be out for up to four weeks after injuring his hamstring during the Bournemouth game.
Coquelin’s injury leaves Arsene Wenger short of options in central midfield, with long-term absentee Santi Cazorla still sidelined by an ankle problem and Mohamed Elneny on international duty with Egypt at the African Cup of Nations.
Aaron Ramsey and Granit Xhaka are the only senior central midfielders available. “He [Coquelin] is out for three or four weeks now [with a] hamstring [injury],” Wenger said on Thursday.
Striker Danny Welbeck, meanwhile, could return to action in Saturday’s FA Cup third-round tie against English Championship side Preston North End after recovering from a long-term knee injury.
Wenger said that the FA Cup is high on Arsenal’s list of priorities this season, but the long-serving manager will rest influential duo Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil for Saturday’s clash, while central defender Laurent Koscielny misses out because of a “slight thigh problem”.
“I haven’t decided on the team yet. It depends on everyone’s fitness levels, but we will play with around 90 percent of the first team squad,” Wenger said. “I will rest Sanchez and Ozil, who is coming in today after having been in bed for two weeks with a suspected throat infection. Apart from that, everyone else will play as the FA cup is a big priority for us.”
Chelsea manager Antonio Conte suggested there could be up to six teams fighting for the Premier League title this season after his side’s 2-0 defeat at Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday.
Wenger, however, feels there is still some way to go before any of the chasing pack pose a threat to Chelsea, who have a five-point cushion at the top of the table after 20 games.
“Looks like Chelsea are quite comfortable, but it raises hope for others,” he added.
Sanchez, who is locked in negotiations over a new Arsenal contract, was visibly frustrated as he angrily threw his gloves to the floor after Tuesday’s draw at Dean Court.
Wenger, however, was quick to pour cold water on media reports suggesting that the winger is getting fed up with life at the North London club.
“What is surprising about that [Sanchez’s reaction]? We want to win the games. If you don’t, you’re not happy. That is normal. Of course he is fine,” Wenger said.

How the bonus system works
The two riders are among several riders in the UAE to receive the top payment of £10,000 under the Thank You Fund of £16 million (Dh80m), which was announced in conjunction with Deliveroo's £8 billion (Dh40bn) stock market listing earlier this year.
The £10,000 (Dh50,000) payment is made to those riders who have completed the highest number of orders in each market.
There are also riders who will receive payments of £1,000 (Dh5,000) and £500 (Dh2,500).
All riders who have worked with Deliveroo for at least one year and completed 2,000 orders will receive £200 (Dh1,000), the company said when it announced the scheme.

Mercer, the investment consulting arm of US services company Marsh & McLennan, expects its wealth division to at least double its assets under management (AUM) in the Middle East as wealth in the region continues to grow despite economic headwinds, a company official said.
Mercer Wealth, which globally has $160 billion in AUM, plans to boost its AUM in the region to $2-$3bn in the next 2-3 years from the present $1bn, said Yasir AbuShaban, a Dubai-based principal with Mercer Wealth.
“Within the next two to three years, we are looking at reaching $2 to $3 billion as a conservative estimate and we do see an opportunity to do so,” said Mr AbuShaban.
Mercer does not directly make investments, but allocates clients’ money they have discretion to, to professional asset managers. They also provide advice to clients.
“We have buying power. We can negotiate on their (client’s) behalf with asset managers to provide them lower fees than they otherwise would have to get on their own,” he added.
Mercer Wealth’s clients include sovereign wealth funds, family offices, and insurance companies among others.
From its office in Dubai, Mercer also looks after Africa, India and Turkey, where they also see opportunity for growth.
Wealth creation in Middle East and Africa (MEA) grew 8.5 per cent to $8.1 trillion last year from $7.5tn in 2015, higher than last year’s global average of 6 per cent and the second-highest growth in a region after Asia-Pacific which grew 9.9 per cent, according to consultancy Boston Consulting Group (BCG). In the region, where wealth grew just 1.9 per cent in 2015 compared with 2014, a pickup in oil prices has helped in wealth generation.
BCG is forecasting MEA wealth will rise to $12tn by 2021, growing at an annual average of 8 per cent.
Drivers of wealth generation in the region will be split evenly between new wealth creation and growth of performance of existing assets, according to BCG.
Another general trend in the region is clients’ looking for a comprehensive approach to investing, according to Mr AbuShaban.
“Institutional investors or some of the families are seeing a slowdown in the available capital they have to invest and in that sense they are looking at optimizing the way they manage their portfolios and making sure they are not investing haphazardly and different parts of their investment are working together,” said Mr AbuShaban.
Some clients also have a higher appetite for risk, given the low interest-rate environment that does not provide enough yield for some institutional investors. These clients are keen to invest in illiquid assets, such as private equity and infrastructure.
“What we have seen is a desire for higher returns in what has been a low-return environment specifically in various fixed income or bonds,” he said.
“In this environment, we have seen a de facto increase in the risk that clients are taking in things like illiquid investments, private equity investments, infrastructure and private debt, those kind of investments were higher illiquidity results in incrementally higher returns.”
The Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, one of the largest sovereign wealth funds, said in its 2016 report that has gradually increased its exposure in direct private equity and private credit transactions, mainly in Asian markets and especially in China and India. The authority’s private equity department focused on structured equities owing to “their defensive characteristics.”

Sinopharm vaccine explained
The Sinopharm vaccine was created using techniques that have been around for decades.
“This is an inactivated vaccine. Simply what it means is that the virus is taken, cultured and inactivated," said Dr Nawal Al Kaabi, chair of the UAE's National Covid-19 Clinical Management Committee.
"What is left is a skeleton of the virus so it looks like a virus, but it is not live."
This is then injected into the body.
"The body will recognise it and form antibodies but because it is inactive, we will need more than one dose. The body will not develop immunity with one dose," she said.
"You have to be exposed more than one time to what we call the antigen."
The vaccine should offer protection for at least months, but no one knows how long beyond that.
Dr Al Kaabi said early vaccine volunteers in China were given shots last spring and still have antibodies today.
“Since it is inactivated, it will not last forever," she said.
