ABU DHABI // The first phase of Al Wahda's preparation under Karel Jarolim has passed successfully.
Playing in a four-team friendly tournament, the Arabian Gulf League side finished unbeaten in second place, behind Al Fateh of Saudi Arabia, after two draws and rounding off with a 1-0 win over Saudi side Al Shabab, courtesy of substitute Bader Al Harthi, at Al Nahyan Stadium on Friday night.
"We don't play for results in these friendly matches, but to come off any competition with a good record makes you feel the team is on the right track," Jarolim said.
"The very idea of the friendly tournament was for us to have a look at the majority of the players in action, for us to try out new combinations and to improve on the areas we need to improve.
"We are quite pleased with the first part of our preparation, although the humid weather was not the ideal to play at the same level for the full 90 minutes."
Wahda will travel to Austria for a three-week camp after Eid for the next phase of their preparation, with a few more friendlies planned during this period.
Jarolim's side, the tournament hosts, was denied victories in the first two matches by the Kuwait Olympic team, as well as the eventual champions, Fateh, through late equalisers.
Kuwait cancelled Mahmoud Khamis' 19th-minute lead two minutes from time and Fateh scored an injury-time equaliser after Mohammed Al Shehhi had given them a 24th-minute lead.
"We made a few late substitutions and conceded a goal each in the first two games, due to the lack of understanding between the players, but they showed a lot of improvement to preserve the lead in the final game," the coach said.
"Obviously, there is a lot of work to be done to establish a strong and bigger squad for the long season ahead."
Jarolim had a good look at the club's new foreign players – Chilean international Marco Estrada, Argentines Sebastian Tagliabue and Damian Diaz, and Dino Djulbic, the Australian centre-back who joined the Abu Dhabi club in the middle of last season.
"I didn't want to tax them too much on these harsh conditions," Jarolim said when asked about the performances of the foreign players.
"They have all come from top flight clubs and I believe they are some of the club's high-profile signings in a while. I am in no hurry to rush them into games so early in the season.
"I have discussed with them their roles and how best they can contribute to the team.
"They would also need the contributions from the local players around them and I feel we have a good number of them at the club.
"We still have around four weeks before the start of the competitions and from the information I have gathered it is going to be the most competitive season.
"I feel we are on the right track and are fully prepared for the challenges ahead and will hopefully fulfil the objectives of our fans."

Dubai works towards better air quality by 2021
Dubai is on a mission to record good air quality for 90 per cent of the year – up from 86 per cent annually today – by 2021.
The municipality plans to have seven mobile air-monitoring stations by 2020 to capture more accurate data in hourly and daily trends of pollution.
These will be on the Palm Jumeirah, Al Qusais, Muhaisnah, Rashidiyah, Al Wasl, Al Quoz and Dubai Investment Park.
“It will allow real-time responding for emergency cases,” said Khaldoon Al Daraji, first environment safety officer at the municipality.
“We’re in a good position except for the cases that are out of our hands, such as sandstorms.
“Sandstorms are our main concern because the UAE is just a receiver.
“The hotspots are Iran, Saudi Arabia and southern Iraq, but we’re working hard with the region to reduce the cycle of sandstorm generation.”
Mr Al Daraji said monitoring as it stood covered 47 per cent of Dubai.
There are 12 fixed stations in the emirate, but Dubai also receives information from monitors belonging to other entities.
“There are 25 stations in total,” Mr Al Daraji said.
“We added new technology and equipment used for the first time for the detection of heavy metals.
“A hundred parameters can be detected but we want to expand it to make sure that the data captured can allow a baseline study in some areas to ensure they are well positioned.”

Why it pays to compare
A comparison of sending Dh20,000 from the UAE using two different routes at the same time - the first direct from a UAE bank to a bank in Germany, and the second from the same UAE bank via an online platform to Germany - found key differences in cost and speed. The transfers were both initiated on January 30.
Route 1: bank transfer
The UAE bank charged Dh152.25 for the Dh20,000 transfer. On top of that, their exchange rate margin added a difference of around Dh415, compared with the mid-market rate.
Total cost: Dh567.25 - around 2.9 per cent of the total amount
Total received: €4,670.30
Route 2: online platform
The UAE bank’s charge for sending Dh20,000 to a UK dirham-denominated account was Dh2.10. The exchange rate margin cost was Dh60, plus a Dh12 fee.
Total cost: Dh74.10, around 0.4 per cent of the transaction
Total received: €4,756
The UAE bank transfer was far quicker – around two to three working days, while the online platform took around four to five days, but was considerably cheaper. In the online platform transfer, the funds were also exposed to currency risk during the period it took for them to arrive.

Muslim Council of Elders condemns terrorism on religious sites
The Muslim Council of Elders has strongly condemned the criminal attacks on religious sites in Britain.
It firmly rejected “acts of terrorism, which constitute a flagrant violation of the sanctity of houses of worship”.
“Attacking places of worship is a form of terrorism and extremism that threatens peace and stability within societies,” it said.
The council also warned against the rise of hate speech, racism, extremism and Islamophobia. It urged the international community to join efforts to promote tolerance and peaceful coexistence.

Another way to earn air miles
In addition to the Emirates and Etihad programmes, there is the Air Miles Middle East card, which offers members the ability to choose any airline, has no black-out dates and no restrictions on seat availability. Air Miles is linked up to HSBC credit cards and can also be earned through retail partners such as Spinneys, Sharaf DG and The Toy Store.
An Emirates Dubai-London round-trip ticket costs 180,000 miles on the Air Miles website. But customers earn these ‘miles’ at a much faster rate than airline miles. Adidas offers two air miles per Dh1 spent. Air Miles has partnerships with websites as well, so booking.com and agoda.com offer three miles per Dh1 spent.
“If you use your HSBC credit card when shopping at our partners, you are able to earn Air Miles twice which will mean you can get that flight reward faster and for less spend,” says Paul Lacey, the managing director for Europe, Middle East and India for Aimia, which owns and operates Air Miles Middle East.
