Robbie Keane plundered a hat-trick as the Republic of Ireland maintained a perfect start to their Euro 2016 qualifying campaign with a 7-0 demolition of Gibraltar.

Keane, 34, who plays for LA Galaxy in the United States, struck three times inside 12 first-half minutes to wrap up a second successive Group D victory and leave the visitors in tatters.

The Ireland skipper, winning his 136th cap, has scored 65 international goals, only three fewer than West Germany’s Gerd Muller, whose haul of 68 came in just 62 appearances for his country.

James McClean added a second-half double either side of keeper Jordan Perez’s own goal, and Wes Hoolahan capped a fine individual display with a seventh with 59 minutes gone.

Of the emphatic win, Martin O’Neill, the Ireland coach, said: “It was nice to get the early goal in the game and the goals coming early in the second half as well.

“I thought we got a little bit sloppy in the last 20 minutes but outside that I’m very, very pleased.”

Elsewhere in the same group, Scotland picked up their first win of the campaign as they defeated Georgia 1-0 thanks to an own goal from Akaki Khubutia.

Steven Naismith, the Scottish forward, felt his side had been worth a bigger winning margin over the 90 minutes.

“The game plan worked very well and the only thing was there weren’t more goals,” the Everton player said.

“I thought we played well, pushing them right back and creating all the chances.”

In Group F, Romania and Hungary drew 1-1, which was the same scoreline as in Group I in the game between Armenia and Serbia.

The figure was broadly flat immediately before the Covid-19 pandemic, standing at 216,000 in the year to June 2018 and 224,000 in the year to June 2019.

It then dropped to an estimated 111,000 in the year to June 2020 when restrictions introduced during the pandemic limited travel and movement.

The total rose to 254,000 in the year to June 2021, followed by steep jumps to 634,000 in the year to June 2022 and 906,000 in the year to June 2023.

The latest available figure of 728,000 for the 12 months to June 2024 suggests levels are starting to decrease.

Quick pearls of wisdom

Focus on gratitude: And do so deeply, he says. “Think of one to three things a day that you’re grateful for. It needs to be specific, too, don’t just say ‘air.’ Really think about it. If you’re grateful for, say, what your parents have done for you, that will motivate you to do more for the world.”

Know how to fight: Shetty married his wife, Radhi, three years ago (he met her in a meditation class before he went off and became a monk). He says they’ve had to learn to respect each other’s “fighting styles” – he’s a talk it-out-immediately person, while she needs space to think. “When you’re having an argument, remember, it’s not you against each other. It’s both of you against the problem. When you win, they lose. If you’re on a team you have to win together.”
