Concerns over shisha smoke (see editorial, above) are compounded by the beautiful winter weather, which has persuaded many families and friends out into the open, where barbecues are often topped-off with a relaxing shisha.

But with the winter weather now here, there are other, more wholesome ways to get fresh air. Perhaps the best is by repeated sharp intakes of breath at the Al Ain Air Championship, which ended its three-day run last night. This paper is, of course, a big advocate of cycling, but camping is also a great way of sampling the desert around Abu Dhabi and Dubai, or the mountain scenery of the northern emirates. For those determined to stay indoors, there’s always the cinema. Rumour has it there’s even a good sci-fi film showing in a handful of places.
