The Formula One Grand Prix starts today, which can only mean one thing: our city is abuzz with parties, parades, music and much more. First staged in 2009, the event has expanded in each subsequent year to incorporate more activities and more entertainment.

The occasion also marks the continued expansion of Yas Island. What was six years ago a sandy stretch with little more than the Yas Marina Circuit has now turned into a destination offering world-class attractions including Ferrari World, the world’s largest indoor theme park, as well as Yas Mall.

This year Formula One and National Day will nearly coincide, for the first time since Abu Dhabi began hosting the race. This convergence of car-orientated events is made even sweeter by world champion Lewis Hamilton’s race number being 44. He certainly won’t be the only vehicle bedecked in that number this year, but we can be confident he will be the fastest.
