If dramas and plays have the power to stir up patriotic emotions, then few can match Khiyanat Watan (“The Betrayal of a Country”), a TV show being broadcast during Ramadan. It has brought out Emiratis’ love for their country. The series appears to reference the activities of members of a secret terror group who were prosecuted last year for planning to overthrow the Government.

The programme highlights Emiratis’ strong feelings of patriotism, as well as the commitment of the leadership to give every citizen a life that’s the envy of many in other parts of the world. One Twitter user pointed out that “most of those caught had been living in high-end homes and enjoyed a lavish life”.

“These people are traitors who do not deserve to live in this country,” wrote another user. He also expressed his disgust for those people for using Islam to justify their actions.

Nationalism is about being a responsible citizen, the tweet said. Most people agreed as they condemned the conspirators. Others repeated their faith in the country’s justice system and expressed their gratitude for the law-enforcement personnel for “protecting the country from enemies.”
