India must crack down on the menace of quacks
I refer to your article Indian quacks on the run after killing newborn (April 27): it was well-researched, if horrifying, to read about two men posing as doctors, who mutilated a baby to convince the pregnant mother that she had given birth to a girl. Neither was a qualified doctor but a quack. They are prevalent in India, where they are found in almost all states. Some quacks are leading practitioners of medicine and have attained reputations as saviours of the people. But in reality, most are ill-qualified, ill-read and only harm society. The Indian government should be vigilant and eradicate this menace.

This is a moment of hope in Korea
I refer to your pithy editorial Korea peace agreement is a stunning breakthrough but are 'good things' really happening? (April 27). Congratulations to Kim Jong-un and Moon Jae-in for breaking from the past and discussing potential peace between North and South Korea. As rightly underscored in your editorial, it remains to be seen whether the peace treaty will be executed. Nevertheless, it is a step in the right direction. If and when the sanctions against North Korea are lifted, the people of that country will have better access to medical supplies and care. Mr Kim was at his charming best, when after stepping into South Korea, he invited Moon Jae-in to take a step into North Korea also and have a handshake. This seems to have been a choreographed step and was quite something to watch.

$1,000 award for 1,000 days on madrasa portal
Daily cash awards of $1,000 dollars will sweeten the Madrasa e-learning project by tempting more pupils to an education portal to deepen their understanding of math and sciences.
School children are required to watch an educational video each day and answer a question related to it. They then enter into a raffle draw for the $1,000 prize.
“We are targeting everyone who wants to learn. This will be $1,000 for 1,000 days so there will be a winner every day for 1,000 days,” said Sara Al Nuaimi, project manager of the Madrasa e-learning platform that was launched on Tuesday by the Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, to reach Arab pupils from kindergarten to grade 12 with educational videos.
“The objective of the Madrasa is to become the number one reference for all Arab students in the world. The 5,000 videos we have online is just the beginning, we have big ambitions. Today in the Arab world there are 50 million students. We want to reach everyone who is willing to learn.”
