I am writing about the edits made to the film Gone Girl for screening in the UAE (The art of cutting sensitively, October 20)
My husband and I saw it, loved it and didn’t even realise there were any cuts.

Instead of removing the offending scenes, they just zoom in on a lamp.
You can still follow the story but they don’t show any nudity. It is very well done.

Families support dedicated lanes for school buses
I agree with the idea proposed in Call for bus lanes to ease school traffic (October 20).
Not only should there be dedicated bus lanes during peak hours but the authorities should consider the following:
Changing school timings to 7am to 1pm so they do not clash with the peak working hours; coordinating Metro and public RTA bus routes dedicated to schools; and banning large lorries from highways or roads near main roads leading to schools.
Lorries are one of the main causes of traffic delays and road accidents due to cars trying to overtake them.
There should be a higher traffic police presence during the hours that school buses are on the road. They should stop lane overtakers, issue on-the-spot tickets to drivers whose cars block traffic junctions, fine jaywalkers and monitor dangerous driving.
Anna McBride, Dubai
My son uses the school bus every day. He is happy at school but he hates having to use the bus.
With noisy and crowded buses, angry assistants and frustrated students waiting for a long time outside in the hot weather, the service is horrible.
Unfortunately, we cannot get by without it.
V Gheradi, Abu Dhabi
We definitely need a dedicated lane here in Doha, too, but not only for school buses.
The lane should be for all vehicles carrying schoolchildren. There should be random checks to ensure there is no misuse of these special lanes.

Residents want more parking
The editorial, Paid parking a price of Dubai's success (October 20), makes a sensible point about the benefits to businesses from restricted parking.
However, the shopping area in The Greens has its own parking area and the rest of the area is residential.
One allocated parking space is not enough if you own a two- or three-bedroom property.
Brett Pearson, Abu Dhabi
Some people don’t want to use public transport, and they shouldn’t be forced to do so due to lack of parking.

Credit should be used responsibly
It was interesting to read Gillian Duncan's article, Are UAE banks sending a mixed message on debt? (October 18).
Credit cards and loans are tools, like a hammer or a saw is a tool.
If you use them irresponsibly, you will have a bad time. But if you use them correctly, you will succeed.
You don’t blame the hammer shop when you bang your thumb with a hammer.

Motorcyclists need maturity
I refer to the changes in the laws regarding motorcycles (Higher age limit for bikers planned, October 20).
Driving motorcycles is more risky below the age of 24 and so it would be a good thing if the age limit were raised.

Any exercise is great for children
California Dreaming (October 19), about the junior jiu-jitsu team competing in Los Angeles, asks what other sports should be promoted in the UAE.
I think we should support anything that gets young people moving.

Practising road safety can pay
Cash rewards for safe drivers (October 20) describes a great initiative by Dubai police.
As they say, you catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.
