US president-elect Donald Trump rang the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange on Thursday, after being named Time magazine's person of the year for the second time. To cheers of “USA, USA”, Mr Trump marked the ceremonial start of the day's trading on Wall Street, before pumping his fist in the air. He was accompanied by his wife Melania, his daughters Ivanka and Tiffany, and vice president-elect JD Vance. Projected on the wall behind him was the Time magazine cover featuring him. He called the invitation “a tremendous honour”. “Time magazine, getting this honour for the second time, I think I like it better this time actually,” he added. Many US stocks have soared to record highs since Mr Trump's election last month, building on broad gains over the course of this year. Mr Trump won the presidential vote in November in part by capitalising on concerns among US voters about the economy and inflation. He has promised to lower food and housing costs, as well as corporate taxes. He has also promised to impose tariffs on foreign goods. Mr Trump was also named Time magazine's person of the year in 2016, the same year he was elected to the White House for the first time.
