UAE to deliver clothing and blankets to protect Gaza families from winter

The UAE on Monday launched a “warmth and safety” campaign in the Gaza Strip, aimed at providing essential winter supplies to families suffering in harsh weather, following the devastating floods last year.

Under the scheme launched under Operation Gallant Knight 3 and in co-operation with the International Charity Organisation, about 95,000 items of clothing and blankets will be distributed, state news agency Wam reported.

The enclave's residents have had to contend with extreme weather in recent weeks. Last month, heavy rain flooded many streets and tents as severe cold struck put thousands of Palestinians in danger.

Civil defence workers had to respond as scores of temporary homes collapsed, with entire families evacuated as fierce storms raged.

The Gallant Knight 3 operation hopes to protect one million people from extreme cold, while strengthening efforts to meet the basic needs of the most affected groups.

It comes just days after the Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Humanitarian Ship – named in honour of the Vice President and Ruler of Dubai – arrived in Al Arish, Egypt, stocked with supplies for Palestinians Gaza.

The vessel was carrying more than 7,300 tonnes of basic food supplies, shelter materials and winter clothing, as well as nutritional supplements designated for children and women.

The UAE's campaign for Gaza – launched under the directive of President Sheikh Mohamed – has been conducted in partnership with Emirates Red Crescent and other charitable groups across the country.

In November, the UAE was identified by the UN as one of the world's leading aid donors, contributing $2.6 billion to support international relief efforts, with more than 103,000 tonnes of supplies.
