Guaraná Antarctica

The official drink of the Brazilian national football team is an exotic concoction made from guaraná berries grown on plantations in the Amazon. Its flavour is somewhat similar to Coke but with a berry aftertaste; it also has a stronger caffeine kick, so it really hits the spot when you need something to propel you through a sluggish afternoon at work. Available in select local shops for under Dh2.

Waitrose spicy onion & garlic relish

I recently discovered what may be the most appetising condiment I’ve ever tasted: an onion and garlic relish from the upmarket chain Waitrose. Made from a blend of dried onions, barley malt vinegar, cayenne pepper, chillies and garlic powder, it’s pretty versatile – I’ve been eating it with everything from omelettes and salads to fish and chicken. A mere half a teaspoon is enough to deliver an explosion of intense flavour in your mouth. Want an extra kick? Mix in some Dijon mustard. Dh12 for a 320g jar.

If I was jaded I’d say Lululemon Athletica’s new three-step meditation movement, the brainchild of the company founders Chip and Shannon Wilson, is a do-good attempt to make everyone forget about those see-through yoga trousers. While these clothes are gorgeous and usually well-made (and beloved by local yogis), the one thing that has always bugged me is the expense relative to the intent of the practice. From time to time, when I look around a class and spot more than 20 people decked out in Dh400+ worth of gear, I can’t help but think it’s not right. That’s why I was happy to click on the “shop” button on whil’s home page, only to find this simple and refreshing message: “But you already have everything you need.” www.whil.com

Bought it, love it, can't live without it

The toll of not having enough sleep is most obvious around the eyes. Bleary with dark shadows or bags, one look in the mirror at your haggard reflection is enough to send you straight back under the covers, desperate not to have to face the world. Party girls, new mums and you anxious insomniacs need no longer fear inquiries from well-meaning (or snarky) colleagues. The new triple oxygen instant energising eye mask from bliss will take you from “zombie” to “fresh as a daisy” within 15 minutes. I keep a pack in my fridge at all times; it soothes, brightens, de-puffs and hydrates the area around your eyes. The package says it releases “three forms of glow-inducing oxygen”. While I don’t exactly understand the science behind it, it has helped me save face on numerous occasions. The bliss triple oxygen instant energising eye mask costs Dh248.75 for a box of four. Ten tax points to be aware of in 2026

1. Domestic VAT refund amendments: request your refund within five years

If a business does not apply for the refund on time, they lose their credit.

2. E-invoicing in the UAE

Businesses should continue preparing for the implementation of e-invoicing in the UAE, with 2026 a preparation and transition period ahead of phased mandatory adoption. 

3. More tax audits

Tax authorities are increasingly using data already available across multiple filings to identify audit risks. 

4. More beneficial VAT and excise tax penalty regime

Tax disputes are expected to become more frequent and more structured, with clearer administrative objection and appeal processes. The UAE has adopted a new penalty regime for VAT and excise disputes, which now mirrors the penalty regime for corporate tax.

5. Greater emphasis on statutory audit

There is a greater need for the accuracy of financial statements. The International Financial Reporting Standards standards need to be strictly adhered to and, as a result, the quality of the audits will need to increase.

6. Further transfer pricing enforcement

Transfer pricing enforcement, which refers to the practice of establishing prices for internal transactions between related entities, is expected to broaden in scope. The UAE will shortly open the possibility to negotiate advance pricing agreements, or essentially rulings for transfer pricing purposes. 

7. Limited time periods for audits

Recent amendments also introduce a default five-year limitation period for tax audits and assessments, subject to specific statutory exceptions. While the standard audit and assessment period is five years, this may be extended to up to 15 years in cases involving fraud or tax evasion. 

8. Pillar 2 implementation 

Many multinational groups will begin to feel the practical effect of the Domestic Minimum Top-Up Tax (DMTT), the UAE's implementation of the OECD’s global minimum tax under Pillar 2. While the rules apply for financial years starting on or after January 1, 2025, it is 2026 that marks the transition to an operational phase.

9. Reduced compliance obligations for imported goods and services

Businesses that apply the reverse-charge mechanism for VAT purposes in the UAE may benefit from reduced compliance obligations. 

10. Substance and CbC reporting focus

Tax authorities are expected to continue strengthening the enforcement of economic substance and Country-by-Country (CbC) reporting frameworks. In the UAE, these regimes are increasingly being used as risk-assessment tools, providing tax authorities with a comprehensive view of multinational groups’ global footprints and enabling them to assess whether profits are aligned with real economic activity.
