Stellar staycation packages, starting with Dubai’s Ottoman-inspired Jumeirah Zabeel Saray hotel

  • Arabic

As I pulled up to the Jumeirah Zabeel Saray hotel on Dubai's Palm Jumeirah, I had one man on my mind: Tom Cruise. During filming for Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol in 2010, the actor shot scenes at the property – and I was about to darken the same doors.

From its imposing facade to its jaw-dropping lobby, Zabeel Saray makes an impact from the get-go. There’s definitely something cinematic about it and it’s easy to see why the Sultan’s Lounge inside the entrance, with its rich Ottoman fabrics and flourishes, lent itself to moviemaking.

Bed, bath and beyond

After a swift check-in, I was off to explore my sea-facing room with its cool interior of dark wood, deep rugs and moody lighting. Carrying through the Turkish theme, and compact though it may have been, the lavish bathroom completely upstaged the bedroom. It had floor-to-ceiling grey marble, magnificent tasselled mosaic lamps, a gold hammered sink and a recessed sunken bath large enough to park a small car in.

Spa-tacular pampering

The hotel’s Talise Ottoman spa was calling my name. The space is vast at 8,000 square metres, and beautifully designed with halo chandeliers hanging from high dome ceilings and mosaics at every turn.

The traditional Turkish hammam was unlike any I’d experienced before and was, without question, the best.

It took place in an ornate private wet room and I lay upon a huge, heated marble stone. From being lathered with foot-high soapsuds to surrendering to the therapeutic hair wash, this ancient ritual should be at the top of the list for tourists and residents alike.

If you’re looking for spa alternatives to hammams during Ramadan, there are also 42 treatment rooms offering everything from hydrotherapy to desert sand body scrubs and marine flora wraps.

If you’re a fan of extremes, a trip to the snow room before retreating to one of the spa’s heated marble recliners is an absolute must.

Iftar

There’s a good selection of iftars to choose from at Zabeel Saray this Ramadan, not least the Imperium restaurant, offering French cuisine. There’s also Turkish food at Lalezar from sunset to 8.30pm, from Dh195 per person.

I opted for Al Nafoorah, which lived up to its promise of authentic Lebanese fare. The venue was packed with tables of Arab families partaking of the Dh185 meal deal, which included juices, water and soft drinks. Particular standouts from the hot mezzeh include lamb sambousek and kebbeh, while the Arabian-spiced summan fillet and mixed grill shone as mains.

Suhoor

For suhoor, a top recommendation is to head to MusicHall, adjoining Zabeel Saray, which this month has been transformed into Masrah Ramadan, or the theatre of Ramadan. Guests can order from an à la carte suhoor menu and also enjoy live performances showcasing Arab talent.

The last word

A one-night staycation at Zabeel Saray certainly felt like two, which would seem to be the ultimate goal of any same-city retreat. It’s a palatial space – and a peaceful one, with the popular private cinema having been respectfully closed during the Holy Month.

It will, however, be fully operational again come August. In the meantime, if you’re looking to step back into the Golden Age and desire a mini-break involving Ottomans and opulence, The Crescent (west) venue will no doubt leave you feeling mission accomplished.

Tax authority targets shisha levy evasion

The Federal Tax Authority will track shisha imports with electronic markers to protect customers and ensure levies have been paid.

Khalid Ali Al Bustani, director of the tax authority, on Sunday said the move is to "prevent tax evasion and support the authority’s tax collection efforts".

The scheme’s first phase, which came into effect on 1st January, 2019, covers all types of imported and domestically produced and distributed cigarettes. As of May 1, importing any type of cigarettes without the digital marks will be prohibited.

He said the latest phase will see imported and locally produced shisha tobacco tracked by the final quarter of this year.

"The FTA also maintains ongoing communication with concerned companies, to help them adapt their systems to meet our requirements and coordinate between all parties involved," he said.

As with cigarettes, shisha was hit with a 100 per cent tax in October 2017, though manufacturers and cafes absorbed some of the costs to prevent prices doubling.

TEACHERS' PAY - WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Pay varies significantly depending on the school, its rating and the curriculum. Here's a rough guide as of January 2021:

- top end schools tend to pay Dh16,000-17,000 a month - plus a monthly housing allowance of up to Dh6,000. These tend to be British curriculum schools rated 'outstanding' or 'very good', followed by American schools

- average salary across curriculums and skill levels is about Dh10,000, recruiters say

- it is becoming more common for schools to provide accommodation, sometimes in an apartment block with other teachers, rather than hand teachers a cash housing allowance

- some strong performing schools have cut back on salaries since the pandemic began, sometimes offering Dh16,000 including the housing allowance, which reflects the slump in rental costs, and sheer demand for jobs

- maths and science teachers are most in demand and some schools will pay up to Dh3,000 more than other teachers in recognition of their technical skills

- at the other end of the market, teachers in some Indian schools, where fees are lower and competition among applicants is intense, can be paid as low as Dh3,000 per month

- in Indian schools, it has also become common for teachers to share residential accommodation, living in a block with colleagues

Dr Afridi's warning signs of digital addiction

Spending an excessive amount of time on the phone.

Neglecting personal, social, or academic responsibilities.

Losing interest in other activities or hobbies that were once enjoyed.

Having withdrawal symptoms like feeling anxious, restless, or upset when the technology is not available.

Experiencing sleep disturbances or changes in sleep patterns.

What are the guidelines?

Under 18 months: Avoid screen time altogether, except for video chatting with family.

Aged 18-24 months: If screens are introduced, it should be high-quality content watched with a caregiver to help the child understand what they are seeing.

Aged 2-5 years: Limit to one-hour per day of high-quality programming, with co-viewing whenever possible.

Aged 6-12 years: Set consistent limits on screen time to ensure it does not interfere with sleep, physical activity, or social interactions.

Teenagers: Encourage a balanced approach – screens should not replace sleep, exercise, or face-to-face socialisation.

Normcore explained

Something of a fashion anomaly, normcore is essentially a celebration of the unremarkable. The term was first popularised by an article in New York magazine in 2014 and has been dubbed “ugly”, “bland’ and "anti-style" by fashion writers. It’s hallmarks are comfort, a lack of pretentiousness and neutrality – it is a trend for those who would rather not stand out from the crowd. For the most part, the style is unisex, favouring loose silhouettes, thrift-shop threads, baseball caps and boyish trainers. It is important to note that normcore is not synonymous with cheapness or low quality; there are high-fashion brands, including Parisian label Vetements, that specialise in this style. Embraced by fashion-forward street-style stars around the globe, it’s uptake in the UAE has been relatively slow.
