Ramadan a good time for membership discounts

  • English
  • Arabic

Many gyms and fitness facilities offer attractive discounts on memberships and group-exercise packages during Ramadan. Here are a few.
Bodytree Studio, Abu Dhabi
The Pilates, yoga and dance institute has a bunch of offers this Ramadan, some of which extend throughout the summer. Our favourite is the Pilates Summer Morning Mat Special session, a 10-class package for Dh395 - a saving of 40 per cent (normally Dh640). The classes can be used in June, July and August, and are held at 10.30am on weekdays at the studio's Mubarak Bin Mohammed Street branch.
Yoga instructor Jacquie Sadek will also hold a pre-iftar yin yoga session every Wednesday during June. The class will focus on stillness and awareness, and use breathing techniques to calm and declutter your thoughts. A light meal of soup, dates and tea will be available after each 5.30pm session (finishes at 6.45pm) and costs Dh100.
Bodytree was formed by the founders of Soma Pilates and Yoga Tree Studios, and in addition to its regular sessions, the studio is known for its wellness programmes for expectant and new mothers.

GFX, Dubai
GFX gym in Business Bay is offering a 15 per cent discount on its group classes during June. The offer is valid on the 20-class package, which normally costs Dh1,200.
The unisex gym has a range of fitness sessions, including Les Mills, tabata, power yoga, body combat, Pilates and pole fitness as well as ballet, karate and Zumba for kids. The hour-long classes begin at 9.30am and the last session is at 8.30pm, seven days of the week.
The gym, which started in April 2014, has a 1,500-square-foot group-training space and boasts state-of-the-art Smart Step and Smart Bar equipment from Les Mills, a Bose sound system and shock-absorbing sprung-wood flooring. It also offers karate, Zumba and ballet classes for children.
GFX is located at Bay Avenue, Executive Towers, Business Bay, Dubai. For more information, call 04 425 5940 or visit www.gfx.ae.
FitMyWay, Dubai
For those who prefer to exercise in the evenings after breaking their fast, FitMyWay in Jumeirah Lakes Towers, has moved its 7.30pm sessions to 8.30pm. While an individual session still costs Dh75, a 10-package group-exercise session costs Dh400 over the summer.
From light Yogalates and fun Zumba Step to intense 20.20.20 (cardio, upper and lower body) and cathartic boxing sessions, there's a range of classes you can choose from, depending on your mood and energy levels.
FitMyWay started in 2007 in Cairo, as an aerobics studio, and opened in Dubai in 2011. For more information, call 04 420 3677 or email info@fitmyway.net.

Daniella Weiss and Nachala
Described as 'the grandmother of the settler movement', she has encouraged the expansion of settlements for decades. The 79 year old leads radical settler movement Nachala, whose aim is for Israel to annex Gaza and the occupied West Bank, where it helps settlers built outposts.

Coco’s Farm and Neria’s Farm
These are illegal outposts in the West Bank, which are at the vanguard of the settler movement. According to the UK, they are associated with people who have been involved in enabling, inciting, promoting or providing support for activities that amount to “serious abuse”.

Tips for entertaining with ease

·         Set the table the night before. It’s a small job but it will make you feel more organised once done.

·         As the host, your mood sets the tone. If people arrive to find you red-faced and harried, they’re not going to relax until you do. Take a deep breath and try to exude calm energy.

·         Guests tend to turn up thirsty. Fill a big jug with iced water and lemon or lime slices and encourage people to help themselves.

·         Have some background music on to help create a bit of ambience and fill any initial lulls in conversations.

·         The meal certainly doesn’t need to be ready the moment your guests step through the door, but if there’s a nibble or two that can be passed around it will ward off hunger pangs and buy you a bit more time in the kitchen.

·         You absolutely don’t have to make every element of the brunch from scratch. Take inspiration from our ideas for ready-made extras and by all means pick up a store-bought dessert.

Five famous companies founded by teens

There are numerous success stories of teen businesses that were created in college dorm rooms and other modest circumstances. Below are some of the most recognisable names in the industry:

  1. Facebook: Mark Zuckerberg and his friends started Facebook when he was a 19-year-old Harvard undergraduate.
  2. Dell: When Michael Dell was an undergraduate student at Texas University in 1984, he started upgrading computers for profit. He starting working full-time on his business when he was 19. Eventually, his company became the Dell Computer Corporation and then Dell Inc.
  3. Subway: Fred DeLuca opened the first Subway restaurant when he was 17. In 1965, Mr DeLuca needed extra money for college, so he decided to open his own business. Peter Buck, a family friend, lent him $1,000 and together, they opened Pete’s Super Submarines. A few years later, the company was rebranded and called Subway.
  4. Mashable: In 2005, Pete Cashmore created Mashable in Scotland when he was a teenager. The site was then a technology blog. Over the next few decades, Mr Cashmore has turned Mashable into a global media company.
  5. Oculus VR: Palmer Luckey founded Oculus VR in June 2012, when he was 19. In August that year, Oculus launched its Kickstarter campaign and raised more than $1 million in three days. Facebook bought Oculus for $2 billion two years later.

Islamophobia definition

A widely accepted definition was made by the All Party Parliamentary Group on British Muslims in 2019: “Islamophobia is rooted in racism and is a type of racism that targets expressions of Muslimness or perceived Muslimness.” It further defines it as “inciting hatred or violence against Muslims”.
