Our best picks from Beautyworld Middle East: camel shampoo, Kardashian hair products and much more

  • English
  • Arabic

Beautyworld Middle East kicked off its 20th year with a brief appearance from American reality television star Khloe Kardashian on Tuesday. At the trade show the 30-year-old showcased Kardashian Beauty Hair products that were developed with her sisters Kourtney and Kim. The three-day event, held at the International Convention and Exhibition Centre in Dubai, fetures 1,450 exhibitors from more than 60 countries. An estimated 30,000 visitors came to view the latest fragrance, beauty and hair innovations by leading international brands. Here's our pick of the products you can expect to see in UAE salons, pharmacies and department stores over the coming year.

Camel shampoo by Camelicious

Camel shampoo made its debut at Beauty World in the shape of four varieties by Camelicious, the UAE camel milk brand produced by Emirates Industry for Camel Milk & Products (EICMP). Dubbed Camellure, and believed to be the first camel milk-based hair treatment worldwide, the products offered by Camelicious Beauty are shampoos for normal, dry, dandruff-prone and coloured hair. The company says they expect the line to be sold in salons across the UAE, at a cost of around Dh30 for 200ml, by the end of the year. Skincare, lotions and cosmetics are also potential areas of expansion for Camellure in the coming years, they added.

Spray-on tattoos by Mozz-Art

These nifty cans from Turkey are a revelation and bound to catch on in the UAE. Available in a spectrum of colours, and with hundreds of tattoo or henna templates, the application process could not be easier or faster. Simply stick the template on your chosen body part, spray for five seconds, leave to dry for 30 seconds and you are good to go. Stains are easily wiped off, and the designs last for five days.

Eco toiletries by Die Bademeisterei

Vegan and organic, these delicately fragranced bath products are beautifully presented as cupcakes and boxes of chocolates. Handmade in Austria, top picks include bathbombs bursting with lavender, rose and figs, and spring flower bath cubes.

Scented jewellery by Les Parfumables

Hailing from Limoges in France, these ceramic bracelets and pendants are a novel idea. Simply spray the centrepiece with your favourite fragrance and it will retain the scent all day.

Victoria’s Secret has rolled them out with its perfume launches in recent years, and they are a great way to protect delicate fabrics such as silk from perfume stains.

Bespoke brushes by Pennelli Faro

Possibly the most tactile stand at Beautyworld was that of Italian company Pennelli Faro, which has been crafting cosmetic and artist brushes since 1971. A wonderfully silky soft collection of crystal-based powder puffs was on display alongside handmade contouring brushes with Murano glass handles. For men, hopefully shaving brushes with exotic wood handles will make their way to the UAE soon.

All-in-one skincare for men by Laboratoires Didier Rase

Integrall is a new multi-purpose male grooming product to hit the market. It is said to rejuvenate, moisturise, regenerate and smooth the skin by means of a patented component called Phyto-adrozyme. The active plant ingredient boosts the biovitality of testosterone, which is said to slow male ageing. Sounds sophisticated, but it is terribly easy to apply. It is absorbed quickly by the skin and provides moisture all day.

Digital nail art printing by Naily

Nail art continues to evolve and a Korean company has developed a printing machine that offers a selection of thousands of designs. Customers can also upload their own photographs. Whereas traditional nail art can be expensive and time consuming, Naily's digital images are printed in a matter of minutes and last as long as your regular polish. Already in Europe, expect to see it soon in UAE salons.

Kardashian Beauty Hair, a line of products to tame tresses, was rolled out by Khloe Kardashian at Beautyworld. The sisters have put their name to a black seed dry oil, a blow-dry cream, curling gel, dry shampoo/conditioner, volume foam and hair spray. For fans who want the complete Kardashian salon experience there is also a range of straighteners, combs, brushes and hairdryers available.

Pigmentation correcting cremes by Fair & White

Developed specifically with the Arab market in mind, the latest range of body milk, face lotions and soap by Fair & White contain the skin lightening agent hydroquinone.

Travel size serums, enriched with Vitamin C and night gels are also available, again, claiming to improve skintone and even out complexions.

Libya's Gold

UN Panel of Experts found regime secretly sold a fifth of the country's gold reserves.

The panel’s 2017 report followed a trail to West Africa where large sums of cash and gold were hidden by Abdullah Al Senussi, Qaddafi’s former intelligence chief, in 2011.

Cases filled with cash that was said to amount to $560m in 100 dollar notes, that was kept by a group of Libyans in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.

A second stash was said to have been held in Accra, Ghana, inside boxes at the local offices of an international human rights organisation based in France.

The more serious side of specialty coffee

While the taste of beans and freshness of roast is paramount to the specialty coffee scene, so is sustainability and workers’ rights.

The bulk of genuine specialty coffee companies aim to improve on these elements in every stage of production via direct relationships with farmers. For instance, Mokha 1450 on Al Wasl Road strives to work predominantly with women-owned and -operated coffee organisations, including female farmers in the Sabree mountains of Yemen.

Because, as the boutique’s owner, Garfield Kerr, points out: “women represent over 90 per cent of the coffee value chain, but are woefully underrepresented in less than 10 per cent of ownership and management throughout the global coffee industry.”

One of the UAE’s largest suppliers of green (meaning not-yet-roasted) beans, Raw Coffee, is a founding member of the Partnership of Gender Equity, which aims to empower female coffee farmers and harvesters.

Also, globally, many companies have found the perfect way to recycle old coffee grounds: they create the perfect fertile soil in which to grow mushrooms.
