The countdown is on for one of the biggest fitness events on Abu Dhabi’s calendar. Whether you’re planning to take part in the 2019 Adnoc Abu Dhabi marathon on Friday, December 6, or cheer on the participants, here’s everything you need to know.
What is it?
Organised by the Abu Dhabi Sports Council with Adnoc as the title sponsor, the Adnoc Abu Dhabi Marathon is the capital’s biggest community sporting event. More than 10,000 people took part in the inaugural race last year and that number is expected to increase this year.
What prizes are up for grabs?
The total prize fund for 2019 is $388,000 (Dh1.4 million), with the male and female winners of the full marathon each taking home $100,000. The rest of the prize fund is divvied up among the winners of other race categories, such as shorter routes or those competing in a wheelchair.
Everyone taking part, meanwhile, gets a race shirt and a medal. Two medal designs were unveiled earlier this year, one for participants completing the 42.2-kilometre run and another for those finishing the 2.5km, 5km and 10km races.
How many routes are there?
In order to be accessible to every fitness level, the event has four races of varying distances:
- The 42.2km marathon: Serious runners can compete with talent from all over the world. Tickets to enter the longest race cost Dh350.
- The 10km run: This one is for recreational runners and short-distance speedsters. Tickets cost Dh150.
- The 5km run: A run that’s great for those who are beginning their fitness journeys and looking for shorter distances. Tickets cost Dh75.
- The 2.5km fun run: You can get the whole family involved with this one. Tickets cost Dh50, while children under 6 can run for free.
Where do I pick up my race pack?
These can be collected between Monday, December 2 and Thursday, December 5 (from 3pm to 9pm) from Event Village, which is located at Adnoc HQ South Plaza. Also, those new to the event or who want more information can attend a race briefing, which will be held at the same location at 7.30pm each day.
What are the timings on the day?
Runners for the marathon and 10km route can drop of their bags 4am on Friday, December 6; the racea then start at 6am. The cut-off for the marathon is six hours, so runners must complete their journey within that time.
The 5km and 2.5km warm-up begins at 9.30am and the races start at 10am.
Where do the races go?
The start line is in front of the Adnoc HQ Tower on Corniche Road. Marathon runners will head along the Corniche, pass by the Emirates Heritage Village, make their way around Marina Mall and through the Event Village located in the South Plaza of the Adnoc HQ campus. Other route highlights include Qasr Al Hosn, one of Abu Dhabi’s oldest stone buildings. Check our video above to see the full route.
How do I get there?
Corniche Road will be shut from 4am on Friday, December 6, with most of the road only re-opening at 12pm (until Nation Towers with partial road closures in place after that).
Parking is limited so participants are advised to look at carpooling, or travelling via taxis, Ubers or Careems, or shuttle buses if possible. Those taking a taxi can be dropped off at designated bays close to the Event Village.
Shuttle buses will be available from 4am to 2pm and operating on a loop system from Zayed Sports City – Gate 1. The buses will drop participants off at designated points near the Event Village.
Marathon runners can park at the Adnoc Tower parking lot located on Al Rumouz Street (follow signs to P2). The car park will be open from 3am and race organisers recommend you arrive before 5am, leaving extra time for your journey. A sticker (labelled P2), which is available in the race pack, must be visible on the front windscreen of your car to get access to this parking.
Those taking part in the other, shorter races can park in any of three locations – Marina Mall car park, Nation Towers car park or Qasr Al Watan car park, which are about a 10-minute walk from the starting point.
Parking is not guaranteed, and race organisers recommend arriving at least an hour before your scheduled start time.
Where can you watch the marathon?
Bystanders can start their spectator journey at the Event Village, open from 4am, where there will be live coverage, family entertainment and food available from refreshment trucks. The ideal location to catch the beginning of the marathon at 6am is from the Grandstand on Abu Dhabi Corniche in front of the Radisson Blu Hotel.
You can also watch the athletes from anywhere along the Corniche Road; their key turnaround points are:
- Grandstand – Start / Finish and at the 10km point
- Turn point 1 – Heritage Park Al Madfaa – 5km-6km and 29km-30km
- Big Flag – 12km
- Event Village – 18km
- King Abdullah Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud Street - 19km-23km
If you’re looking to catch the big finish, the first elite male athletes are expected to complete the race by 8:05am and the first elite females by 8:27am. The finish line is on the Abu Dhabi Corniche.

Why it pays to compare
A comparison of sending Dh20,000 from the UAE using two different routes at the same time - the first direct from a UAE bank to a bank in Germany, and the second from the same UAE bank via an online platform to Germany - found key differences in cost and speed. The transfers were both initiated on January 30.
Route 1: bank transfer
The UAE bank charged Dh152.25 for the Dh20,000 transfer. On top of that, their exchange rate margin added a difference of around Dh415, compared with the mid-market rate.
Total cost: Dh567.25 - around 2.9 per cent of the total amount
Total received: €4,670.30
Route 2: online platform
The UAE bank’s charge for sending Dh20,000 to a UK dirham-denominated account was Dh2.10. The exchange rate margin cost was Dh60, plus a Dh12 fee.
Total cost: Dh74.10, around 0.4 per cent of the transaction

The UAE bank transfer was far quicker – around two to three working days, while the online platform took around four to five days, but was considerably cheaper. In the online platform transfer, the funds were also exposed to currency risk during the period it took for them to arrive.

Citizenship-by-investment programmes
United Kingdom
The UK offers three programmes for residency. The UK Overseas Business Representative Visa lets you open an overseas branch office of your existing company in the country at no extra investment. For the UK Tier 1 Innovator Visa, you are required to invest £50,000 (Dh238,000) into a business. You can also get a UK Tier 1 Investor Visa if you invest £2 million, £5m or £10m (the higher the investment, the sooner you obtain your permanent residency).
All UK residency visas get approved in 90 to 120 days and are valid for 3 years. After 3 years, the applicant can apply for extension of another 2 years. Once they have lived in the UK for a minimum of 6 months every year, they are eligible to apply for permanent residency (called Indefinite Leave to Remain). After one year of ILR, the applicant can apply for UK passport.
The Caribbean
Depending on the country, the investment amount starts from $100,000 (Dh367,250) and can go up to $400,000 in real estate. From the date of purchase, it will take between four to five months to receive a passport.
Portugal
The investment amount ranges from €350,000 to €500,000 (Dh1.5m to Dh2.16m) in real estate. From the date of purchase, it will take a maximum of six months to receive a Golden Visa. Applicants can apply for permanent residency after five years and Portuguese citizenship after six years.
“Among European countries with residency programmes, Portugal has been the most popular because it offers the most cost-effective programme to eventually acquire citizenship of the European Union without ever residing in Portugal,” states Veronica Cotdemiey of Citizenship Invest.
Greece
The real estate investment threshold to acquire residency for Greece is €250,000, making it the cheapest real estate residency visa scheme in Europe. You can apply for residency in four months and citizenship after seven years.
Spain
The real estate investment threshold to acquire residency for Spain is €500,000. You can apply for permanent residency after five years and citizenship after 10 years. It is not necessary to live in Spain to retain and renew the residency visa permit.
Cyprus
Cyprus offers the quickest route to citizenship of a European country in only six months. An investment of €2m in real estate is required, making it the highest priced programme in Europe.
Malta
The Malta citizenship by investment programme is lengthy and investors are required to contribute sums as donations to the Maltese government. The applicant must either contribute at least €650,000 to the National Development & Social Fund. Spouses and children are required to contribute €25,000; unmarried children between 18 and 25 and dependent parents must contribute €50,000 each.
The second step is to make an investment in property of at least €350,000 or enter a property rental contract for at least €16,000 per annum for five years. The third step is to invest at least €150,000 in bonds or shares approved by the Maltese government to be kept for at least five years.
Candidates must commit to a minimum physical presence in Malta before citizenship is granted. While you get residency in two months, you can apply for citizenship after a year.
Egypt
A one-year residency permit can be bought if you purchase property in Egypt worth $100,000. A three-year residency is available for those who invest $200,000 in property, and five years for those who purchase property worth $400,000.

Mercer, the investment consulting arm of US services company Marsh & McLennan, expects its wealth division to at least double its assets under management (AUM) in the Middle East as wealth in the region continues to grow despite economic headwinds, a company official said.
Mercer Wealth, which globally has $160 billion in AUM, plans to boost its AUM in the region to $2-$3bn in the next 2-3 years from the present $1bn, said Yasir AbuShaban, a Dubai-based principal with Mercer Wealth.
“Within the next two to three years, we are looking at reaching $2 to $3 billion as a conservative estimate and we do see an opportunity to do so,” said Mr AbuShaban.
Mercer does not directly make investments, but allocates clients’ money they have discretion to, to professional asset managers. They also provide advice to clients.
“We have buying power. We can negotiate on their (client’s) behalf with asset managers to provide them lower fees than they otherwise would have to get on their own,” he added.
Mercer Wealth’s clients include sovereign wealth funds, family offices, and insurance companies among others.
From its office in Dubai, Mercer also looks after Africa, India and Turkey, where they also see opportunity for growth.
Wealth creation in Middle East and Africa (MEA) grew 8.5 per cent to $8.1 trillion last year from $7.5tn in 2015, higher than last year’s global average of 6 per cent and the second-highest growth in a region after Asia-Pacific which grew 9.9 per cent, according to consultancy Boston Consulting Group (BCG). In the region, where wealth grew just 1.9 per cent in 2015 compared with 2014, a pickup in oil prices has helped in wealth generation.
BCG is forecasting MEA wealth will rise to $12tn by 2021, growing at an annual average of 8 per cent.
Drivers of wealth generation in the region will be split evenly between new wealth creation and growth of performance of existing assets, according to BCG.
Another general trend in the region is clients’ looking for a comprehensive approach to investing, according to Mr AbuShaban.
“Institutional investors or some of the families are seeing a slowdown in the available capital they have to invest and in that sense they are looking at optimizing the way they manage their portfolios and making sure they are not investing haphazardly and different parts of their investment are working together,” said Mr AbuShaban.
Some clients also have a higher appetite for risk, given the low interest-rate environment that does not provide enough yield for some institutional investors. These clients are keen to invest in illiquid assets, such as private equity and infrastructure.
“What we have seen is a desire for higher returns in what has been a low-return environment specifically in various fixed income or bonds,” he said.
“In this environment, we have seen a de facto increase in the risk that clients are taking in things like illiquid investments, private equity investments, infrastructure and private debt, those kind of investments were higher illiquidity results in incrementally higher returns.”
The Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, one of the largest sovereign wealth funds, said in its 2016 report that has gradually increased its exposure in direct private equity and private credit transactions, mainly in Asian markets and especially in China and India. The authority’s private equity department focused on structured equities owing to “their defensive characteristics.”

Dubai is on a mission to record good air quality for 90 per cent of the year – up from 86 per cent annually today – by 2021.
The municipality plans to have seven mobile air-monitoring stations by 2020 to capture more accurate data in hourly and daily trends of pollution.
These will be on the Palm Jumeirah, Al Qusais, Muhaisnah, Rashidiyah, Al Wasl, Al Quoz and Dubai Investment Park.
“It will allow real-time responding for emergency cases,” said Khaldoon Al Daraji, first environment safety officer at the municipality.
“We’re in a good position except for the cases that are out of our hands, such as sandstorms.
“Sandstorms are our main concern because the UAE is just a receiver.
“The hotspots are Iran, Saudi Arabia and southern Iraq, but we’re working hard with the region to reduce the cycle of sandstorm generation.”
Mr Al Daraji said monitoring as it stood covered 47 per cent of Dubai.
There are 12 fixed stations in the emirate, but Dubai also receives information from monitors belonging to other entities.
“There are 25 stations in total,” Mr Al Daraji said.
“We added new technology and equipment used for the first time for the detection of heavy metals.
“A hundred parameters can be detected but we want to expand it to make sure that the data captured can allow a baseline study in some areas to ensure they are well positioned.”
