Valentine's Day is just around the corner and, if you're still deciding how to celebrate, why not carve out a little downtime with your beloved and enjoy a change of scenery on a romantic staycation?

Hotels across the UAE are offering various packages this February, all of which are geared towards couples in love.

There are options to spend an evening on the water, indulge in a romantic dinner for two or snuggle up for a movie marathon. And with overnight stays ranging from Dh600 to Dh12,000, there's something for everyone, no matter the budget.

1. On 'Cloud 9' with The London Project and Caesars Palace Bluewaters Dubai

If you're looking to seriously impress your partner, then the Cloud 9 Valentine's package from The London Project and Caesars Palace Bluewaters might be just what you need.

The day starts with a limousine pick-up and couples will be driven to a waiting helicopter that will whisk them away for a romantic 15-minute trip over Dubai.

After that, they will be driven to The London Project, where a five-course sharing menu inclusive of house beverages and sparkling drinks awaits.

Then, it's off to Caesars Palace Bluewaters Resort for an overnight stay. The next morning, bubbles and breakfast are served in bed, accompanied by amazing views of the Arabian Gulf from your hotel suite.

The package is only available on Sunday, February 14; Dhs8,888 per couple; thelondonproject.com

2. Romance in the desert at Al Maha Desert Resort, Dubai

Endless desert dunes, free-roaming wildlife and a beautiful star-filled sky make Al Maha, a Luxury Collection Desert Resort & Spa, Dubai, one of the emirate's most romantic escapes and, this Valentine's Day, it's pulling out all the stops.

Check-in for a two-night stay on a full-board basis and, as well as having your own private tented villa, each couple will receive a bottle of sparkling to celebrate.

There's also a sunset camel trekking experience for two, followed by sundowners on the dunes. Couples can enjoy an hour-long spa treatment. For an intimate dining experience, staff will set up a multi-course meal on the wooden deck of your villa, overlooking your private pool and with a backdrop of endless dune-lined vistas.

Rates from Dh9,500 (plus tax) per couple; ongoing; al-maha.com

3. Love is in the air at the Waldorf Astoria Ras Al Khaimah

Haemoglobin disorders explained

Thalassaemia is part of a family of genetic conditions affecting the blood known as haemoglobin disorders.

Haemoglobin is a substance in the red blood cells that carries oxygen and a lack of it triggers anemia, leaving patients very weak, short of breath and pale.

The most severe type of the condition is typically inherited when both parents are carriers. Those patients often require regular blood transfusions - about 450 of the UAE's 2,000 thalassaemia patients - though frequent transfusions can lead to too much iron in the body and heart and liver problems.

The condition mainly affects people of Mediterranean, South Asian, South-East Asian and Middle Eastern origin. Saudi Arabia recorded 45,892 cases of carriers between 2004 and 2014.

A World Health Organisation study estimated that globally there are at least 950,000 'new carrier couples' every year and annually there are 1.33 million at-risk pregnancies.

The burning issue

The internal combustion engine is facing a watershed moment – major manufacturer Volvo is to stop producing petroleum-powered vehicles by 2021 and countries in Europe, including the UK, have vowed to ban their sale before 2040. The National takes a look at the story of one of the most successful technologies of the last 100 years and how it has impacted life in the UAE.

Key figures in the life of the fort

Sheikh Dhiyab bin Isa (ruled 1761-1793) Built Qasr Al Hosn as a watchtower to guard over the only freshwater well on Abu Dhabi island.

Sheikh Shakhbut bin Dhiyab (ruled 1793-1816) Expanded the tower into a small fort and transferred his ruling place of residence from Liwa Oasis to the fort on the island.

Sheikh Tahnoon bin Shakhbut (ruled 1818-1833) Expanded Qasr Al Hosn further as Abu Dhabi grew from a small village of palm huts to a town of more than 5,000 inhabitants.

Sheikh Khalifa bin Shakhbut (ruled 1833-1845) Repaired and fortified the fort.

Sheikh Saeed bin Tahnoon (ruled 1845-1855) Turned Qasr Al Hosn into a strong two-storied structure.

Sheikh Zayed bin Khalifa (ruled 1855-1909) Expanded Qasr Al Hosn further to reflect the emirate's increasing prominence.

Sheikh Shakhbut bin Sultan (ruled 1928-1966) Renovated and enlarged Qasr Al Hosn, adding a decorative arch and two new villas.

Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan (ruled 1966-2004) Moved the royal residence to Al Manhal palace and kept his diwan at Qasr Al Hosn.
