Travel Essentials: Apps to keep little minds, and hands, busy

  • English
  • Arabic

Tozzle

A version of a traditional shape-sorting game, this app involves dragging objects on to the correct silhouettes. There are 37 different puzzles, including letters, numbers and animals, drawn in different styles and with pleasing sound effects as the items fit into place. They range from very simple to more complicated, with most being suitable for two- to three-year-olds. Available from the Apple App Store for US$1.99 (Dh7).

Nursery Jam

This app is a surprisingly successful attempt to capture the improvisational spirit of a musical jam session and make it fun for young children. There are four different scenes incorporating a wide range of musical styles from jazz to blues to hip hop to reggae. In each one, tapping different objects on the screen produces a range of sounds with often psychedelic results. Available from the Apple App Store for $2.99 (Dh11).

Wheels on the Bus

This loose rendition of the traditional nursery rhyme consists of various scenes with interactive objects, including sliding doors, moving windscreen wipers and popping bubbles. There are some interesting features, including being able to record your own version of the song, hear it in different languages with different instruments and in "gibberish", which is very cute. Available from the Apple App Store for 99 cents (Dh3.6).
