The highest peak in the Emirates has a new attraction — it's now home to the country's highest skating rink. Perched 1,300 metres above sea level, the Jebel Jais skating rink is open for winter fun.

Not for the faint-hearted, the 150-square-metre overhanging rink comes with a side of Hajar mountain scenery and is part of the Jebel Jais viewing deck park.

While the rink is synthetic rather than being made of ice, visitors should still wrap up, as Jebel Jais is consistently around 10 degrees colder than the rest of the country. Earlier this month, temperatures dipped to as low as 2.7°C.

Operating seasonally, the skating rink is open to adults and children above the age of 3. Tickets cost Dh45 and will get you skate rental and 30 minutes on the rink. It's open Wednesday to Sunday from 10am with the last session of the day wrapping up at 5pm.

The attraction is the latest in a series of outdoor activities to open at the country's tallest mountain, which is also home to the world's longest zip line, the Middle East's first via ferrata and some serious hiking trails. Headed up by Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority and Toroverde Middle East, the developments are part of a bid to position the country's northernmost emirate as a family-friendly adventure destination.
