The welcome
After some confusion finding the valet parking service – the entrance is not where you would expect and signage is not straightforward – when I eventually pull up, I am attended to promptly and efficiently. At the reception counter, I’m greeted with a smile, but despite requesting an early check-in and having it confirmed before arrival, the room is not ready. After a 10-minute wait in the lobby, I am escorted to my room and the luggage follows shortly thereafter.
The neighbourhood
Located in Business Bay in the downtown part of Dubai, this five-star property – the first Steigenberger in the UAE – is right on the new Dubai Canal, just a few minutes from key tourist attractions, including the Burj Khalifa and the Dubai Mall. The hotel offers easy access to the city’s main thoroughfare, Sheikh Zayed Road, and Dubai International Airport is just 15 minutes away.
The room
My 32-square-metre executive suite has views of the canal, made better by the floor-to- ceiling glass panelling in the bedroom and lounge areas. The one-bedroom suite has a bathroom with tub and separate shower and toilet. There’s also a sizeable desk in the bedroom and a day-lounger. The living area is spacious and includes a corner lounge, coffee table and good-sized television. There’s a separate toilet, just inside the entry way.
The service
As you’d expect in a five-star business hotel, the service staff are knowledgeable and helpful. The personnel in the food outlets are well-versed in the offerings and are attentive without being overbearing. Room-service staff are helpful and friendly. When it comes time to return my car at the end of the stay, there is a bit of confusion, but the staff handle the delay in a friendly manner, and although it is an unnecessary wait, their personable approach is appreciated.
The scene
There is a mix of international tourists and business travellers in-house during my stay. That being said, there’s a decidedly casual vibe throughout, particularly in the Swim & Tonic pool area, which offers some of the city’s best views of the Burj Khalifa. The Backyard is a modern, retro space ideal for an early evening wind-down, especially with its backdrop of the Dubai Water Canal.
The food
There are six dining options, including the German bakery Brothaus Bakery-Bistro; The Backyard – a street-art-inspired garden terrace; Swim & Tonic, the poolside eatery; Bayside Restaurant and Terrace, which offers international cuisine; and Das Café, an afternoon-tea option. Breakfast is served in Bayside and consists of a wide selection, including waffles, eggs, fried rice, fresh fruit, turkey bacon, quiche and the obligatory bread and meat stations. Dinner here is less than impressive – the only option is a buffet (Dh140 per person).
Loved
The his and hers toiletries and the views of the Burj Khalifa and Dubai Water Canal.
Hated
That the main dinner restaurant – Bayside Restaurant and Terrace – is limited to a buffet: not everyone wants to eat buffet fare.
The verdict
A well-situated hotel in the centre of Dubai that is ideal for tourists and business travellers alike.
The bottom line
Rooms at Steigenberger Hotel Business Bay (www.steigenberger.com) start from Dh980 per room per night including taxes, breakfast and Wi-Fi.
This review was done at the invitation of the hotel.

Conflict, drought, famine
Estimates of the number of deaths caused by the famine range from 400,000 to 1 million, according to a document prepared for the UK House of Lords in 2024.
It has been claimed that the policies of the Ethiopian government, which took control after deposing Emperor Haile Selassie in a military-led revolution in 1974, contributed to the scale of the famine.
Dr Miriam Bradley, senior lecturer in humanitarian studies at the University of Manchester, has argued that, by the early 1980s, “several government policies combined to cause, rather than prevent, a famine which lasted from 1983 to 1985. Mengistu’s government imposed Stalinist-model agricultural policies involving forced collectivisation and villagisation [relocation of communities into planned villages].
The West became aware of the catastrophe through a series of BBC News reports by journalist Michael Buerk in October 1984 describing a “biblical famine” and containing graphic images of thousands of people, including children, facing starvation.
Band Aid
Bob Geldof, singer with the Irish rock group The Boomtown Rats, formed Band Aid in response to the horrific images shown in the news broadcasts.
With Midge Ure of the band Ultravox, he wrote the hit charity single Do They Know it’s Christmas in December 1984, featuring a string of high-profile musicians.
Following the single’s success, the idea to stage a rock concert evolved.
Live Aid was a series of simultaneous concerts that took place at Wembley Stadium in London, John F Kennedy Stadium in Philadelphia, the US, and at various other venues across the world.
The combined event was broadcast to an estimated worldwide audience of 1.5 billion.
