With two months to go before the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, more lots have been added to the Sotheby’s motor auction which is to coincide with the Formula One event.
Joining the assembled Ferraris, Lamborghinis and Porsches at the Yas Marina Circuit sale will be a Pagani Zonda Aether, a Jaguar XJ220, and the mother of all pick-up trucks, a Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG 6x6. Oh, and another Ferrari, this time an F12tdf. That last one might be the zippiest one of the bunch, with its reported 0-100kph time of 2.9 seconds and a top speed of 340kph.
Interest in supercar auctions of this calibre is high at the moment. Commentators are expecting some of the vehicles to signficantly exceed their estimates – a Lamborghini Veneno Roadster recently sold for nearly 8.3 million Swiss francs (Dh30 million) at a sale in the village of Chenerex, near Geneva - some 50 per cent over its pre-sale valuation - which contradicts recent reports of a stall in classic car sales.
As a guide to the money that could be changing hands, Michael Schumacher’s 2002 F1 championship-winning Ferrari has an estimate of $5.5m, while a Lamborghini Countach dating back to 1979 is set at a reasonable-by-comparison $400,000 to $500,000.
If all this seems a bit expensive, you can also bid for F1 car parts at the auction. These include Fernando Alonso’s Renault R29 engine cover from 2009, or a 1979 pair of Ferrari 312 T4 wings, used by Gilles Villeneuve and Jody Scheckter.
