McLaren has been teasing its "hyper-GT" the Speedtail for some time, but the British carmaker has finally unveiled the finished petrol-electric hybrid – and it's quite the sight.
With a central driving position, and twin passenger seats positioned behind on either side, it deliberately evokes the daddy of the hypercar movement, the McLaren F1.
Its sweeping, teardrop-shaped exterior, meanwhile, has only small echoes of the existing McLaren family's design DNA, with definite hints of such past British masterpieces such as the Jaguar XJ220 and Aston Martin's Valkyrie.
It is the fastest McLaren road car ever, with a top speed of 403kph, while its 1,050hp aids such stunning acceleration that the carmaker is quoting acceleration figures not in 0-to-100kph, but rather 0-to-300kph, a figure that it will hit in a mind-blowing 12.8 seconds.
High-tech innovations include electrochromic windscreen glass that can be darkened at the touch of a button to eliminate the need for sun visors.
Only 106 Speedtails will ever be built, in reference to the total McLaren F1s that were sold, with a starting price tag of a cool Dh8.2 million – and that is before taxes.
The extra bad news? They are all already reserved, although you can be fairly sure that at least a few of those will be making their way to the UAE.
