Anybody who has frequented Dubai's arts hub Alserkal Avenue in the past couple of months may well have spotted a noticeable warehouse just across the street, bearing the name Car Vault. The latest addition to Al Quoz's thriving district has its own works of art within its walls: the new business is not only a luxury-car sales and storage business, but also an official partner with Dubai-based hypercar-makers W Motors.
"We had this idea that we were going to have an urban look, a warehouse feel, which I don't think has ever been done before in Dubai," managing partner Sibtain Jaffer explains of his business's concept. "We wanted to get a nice warehouse, fit it up, very chic and elegant, put all our cars in and have a different concept. We wanted to do car sales and storage hand in hand. When we got this place, then there was the partnership with W Motors, a bit of the car sales, a bit of the storage, it all fell into place.
"Usually, in Dubai, when you go to any car showroom, be it used or new, as soon as you walk in, you've got the white tiles, the white lights, and it's a very hospital feel. Sterile. We're different, and different works."
With 30 years of experience in car sales between them, the team behind Car Vault – completed by Jaffer's brother Asif, both Tanzanians of Indian origin who grew up in Dubai, and business partner Shahram Parvizi – had clients from across the spectrum.
"Because we've been in the car industry that long, we have clients all over the book," Jaffer says. "So we've got cars ranging from Dh300,000 all the way up to Dh3 million. But we don't really have a set minimum. We're doing a bit of storage as well for our very high-end clientele, so when they don't have space in their garages, they give them to us, we take care of them, and they're at liberty to take their cars as and when they like."

The collection – which currently numbers about 80 cars, with plans to expand to 150 to 200 – is impressive. It ranges from two 1960s Chevrolet Corvette C1s (one with less than 1,400 kilometres on the clock) and a pair of AC Cobras through to a variety of Porsches, Ferraris, a Dodge Viper and even an eccentric little Polaris Slingshot three-wheeler, plus stately Bentleys and Rolls-Royces. But the standout not-for-sale exhibits are a brace of W Motors cars: a Lykan HyperSport used in the actual filming of Furious 7 (replete with crash damage) and a non-operational concept/prototype version of the forthcoming Fenyr SuperSport.
Although it has been operating for two months now, Car Vault is still in soft opening, with an official launch planned to coincide with the unveiling of the Fenyr SuperSport and the Dubai International Motors Show in November.
“We’re just really, really looking forward to having it once it comes, and we can test it and drive it,” Jaffer says of the Fenyr. “Look at that car – I don’t think that anything compares to it.”
After that, Car Vault’s next move is likely to be extending its car-storage service, both in Dubai and the Gulf’s favourite summer motoring destination: London.
“We’re looking to do something there,” Jaffer confirms. “With London being such a crowded city, I think the storage part would sell even better there than it would in Dubai. In Dubai, the demand that we’ve had has been big. People want to store their car for a month, two or three months, even a year. We’re going to look for another spot close by, keep it air-conditioned, the same 24/7 access with your own card reader and your own CCTV camera. The whole point is that make it accessible.”

What the law says
Micro-retirement is not a recognised concept or employment status under Federal Decree Law No. 33 of 2021 on the Regulation of Labour Relations (as amended) (UAE Labour Law). As such, it reflects a voluntary work-life balance practice, rather than a recognised legal employment category, according to Dilini Loku, senior associate for law firm Gateley Middle East.
“Some companies may offer formal sabbatical policies or career break programmes; however, beyond such arrangements, there is no automatic right or statutory entitlement to extended breaks,” she explains.
“Any leave taken beyond statutory entitlements, such as annual leave, is typically regarded as unpaid leave in accordance with Article 33 of the UAE Labour Law. While employees may legally take unpaid leave, such requests are subject to the employer’s discretion and require approval.”
If an employee resigns to pursue micro-retirement, the employment contract is terminated, and the employer is under no legal obligation to rehire the employee in the future unless specific contractual agreements are in place (such as return-to-work arrangements), which are generally uncommon, Ms Loku adds.

What you as a drone operator need to know
A permit and licence is required to fly a drone legally in Dubai.
Sanad Academy is the United Arab Emirate’s first RPA (Remotely Piloted Aircraft) training and certification specialists endorsed by the Dubai Civil Aviation authority.
It is responsible to train, test and certify drone operators and drones in UAE with DCAA Endorsement.
“We are teaching people how to fly in accordance with the laws of the UAE,” said Ahmad Al Hamadi, a trainer at Sanad.
“We can show how the aircraft work and how they are operated. They are relatively easy to use, but they need responsible pilots.
“Pilots have to be mature. They are given a map of where they can and can’t fly in the UAE and we make these points clear in the lectures we give.
“You cannot fly a drone without registration under any circumstances.”
Larger drones are harder to fly, and have a different response to location control. There are no brakes in the air, so the larger drones have more power.
The Sanad Academy has a designated area to fly off the Al Ain Road near Skydive Dubai to show pilots how to fly responsibly.
“As UAS technology becomes mainstream, it is important to build wider awareness on how to integrate it into commerce and our personal lives,” said Major General Abdulla Khalifa Al Marri, Commander-in-Chief, Dubai Police.
“Operators must undergo proper training and certification to ensure safety and compliance.
“Dubai’s airspace will undoubtedly experience increased traffic as UAS innovations become commonplace, the Forum allows commercial users to learn of best practice applications to implement UAS safely and legally, while benefitting a whole range of industries.”

Citizenship-by-investment programmes
United Kingdom
The UK offers three programmes for residency. The UK Overseas Business Representative Visa lets you open an overseas branch office of your existing company in the country at no extra investment. For the UK Tier 1 Innovator Visa, you are required to invest £50,000 (Dh238,000) into a business. You can also get a UK Tier 1 Investor Visa if you invest £2 million, £5m or £10m (the higher the investment, the sooner you obtain your permanent residency).
All UK residency visas get approved in 90 to 120 days and are valid for 3 years. After 3 years, the applicant can apply for extension of another 2 years. Once they have lived in the UK for a minimum of 6 months every year, they are eligible to apply for permanent residency (called Indefinite Leave to Remain). After one year of ILR, the applicant can apply for UK passport.
The Caribbean
Depending on the country, the investment amount starts from $100,000 (Dh367,250) and can go up to $400,000 in real estate. From the date of purchase, it will take between four to five months to receive a passport.
Portugal
The investment amount ranges from €350,000 to €500,000 (Dh1.5m to Dh2.16m) in real estate. From the date of purchase, it will take a maximum of six months to receive a Golden Visa. Applicants can apply for permanent residency after five years and Portuguese citizenship after six years.
“Among European countries with residency programmes, Portugal has been the most popular because it offers the most cost-effective programme to eventually acquire citizenship of the European Union without ever residing in Portugal,” states Veronica Cotdemiey of Citizenship Invest.
Greece
The real estate investment threshold to acquire residency for Greece is €250,000, making it the cheapest real estate residency visa scheme in Europe. You can apply for residency in four months and citizenship after seven years.
Spain
The real estate investment threshold to acquire residency for Spain is €500,000. You can apply for permanent residency after five years and citizenship after 10 years. It is not necessary to live in Spain to retain and renew the residency visa permit.
Cyprus
Cyprus offers the quickest route to citizenship of a European country in only six months. An investment of €2m in real estate is required, making it the highest priced programme in Europe.
Malta
The Malta citizenship by investment programme is lengthy and investors are required to contribute sums as donations to the Maltese government. The applicant must either contribute at least €650,000 to the National Development & Social Fund. Spouses and children are required to contribute €25,000; unmarried children between 18 and 25 and dependent parents must contribute €50,000 each.
The second step is to make an investment in property of at least €350,000 or enter a property rental contract for at least €16,000 per annum for five years. The third step is to invest at least €150,000 in bonds or shares approved by the Maltese government to be kept for at least five years.
Candidates must commit to a minimum physical presence in Malta before citizenship is granted. While you get residency in two months, you can apply for citizenship after a year.
Egypt
A one-year residency permit can be bought if you purchase property in Egypt worth $100,000. A three-year residency is available for those who invest $200,000 in property, and five years for those who purchase property worth $400,000.
