One of the world’s most prominent watchmaking companies has announced that it will not be involved in the Baselworld watch and jewellery fair next year.
In a statement, Swiss watchmaker Breitling said: “Despite a successful Baselworld in 2019, we have decided to concentrate on our global Summit format with subsequent local roadshows in 2020.”
The company cited scheduling clashes as the main reason for its withdrawal from the fair, which will take place at the end of April, coinciding with Breitling’s own Summit platform.
Being able to personally respond to customers, media representatives, sales partners and collectors is something that Georges Kern, CEO of Breitling, believes can be better achieved through the Breitling Summit.
Known for its long-standing link with aviation and for being the first watchmaker to invent the chronograph watch, Breitling did not confirm whether or not it would participate in Baselworld 2021.
The news follows the departure of several horology brands, including the Swatch Group and Maurice Lacroix, from the 2019 fair.
Baselworld revealed this week that Rolex is set to increase its presence at next year’s fair, expanding into a space previously used by sister brand Tudor, which will now have its own exhibit.

HIV on the rise in the region
A 2019 United Nations special analysis on Aids reveals 37 per cent of new HIV infections in the Mena region are from people injecting drugs.
New HIV infections have also risen by 29 per cent in western Europe and Asia, and by 7 per cent in Latin America, but declined elsewhere.
Egypt has shown the highest increase in recorded cases of HIV since 2010, up by 196 per cent.
Access to HIV testing, treatment and care in the region is well below the global average.
Few statistics have been published on the number of cases in the UAE, although a UNAIDS report said 1.5 per cent of the prison population has the virus.
What is a robo-adviser?
Robo-advisers use an online sign-up process to gauge an investor’s risk tolerance by feeding information such as their age, income, saving goals and investment history into an algorithm, which then assigns them an investment portfolio, ranging from more conservative to higher risk ones.
These portfolios are made up of exchange traded funds (ETFs) with exposure to indices such as US and global equities, fixed-income products like bonds, though exposure to real estate, commodity ETFs or gold is also possible.
Investing in ETFs allows robo-advisers to offer fees far lower than traditional investments, such as actively managed mutual funds bought through a bank or broker. Investors can buy ETFs directly via a brokerage, but with robo-advisers they benefit from investment portfolios matched to their risk tolerance as well as being user friendly.
Many robo-advisers charge what are called wrap fees, meaning there are no additional fees such as subscription or withdrawal fees, success fees or fees for rebalancing.
