The American brand Jonathan Adler is best known for its craft-inspired pieces which range from furniture to lighting and wall decor. Adler started off as a pottery specialist before expanding his line to include kooky design-led accessories such as his best-selling needlepoint cushion covers and throws.

His "design your own" range combines the brand's handcrafted style with your own personal touch. Instead of building your home around what's available in shops, this feature allows you to customise your home accessories to suit your existing furnishings.

You start off by choosing among cushions, throws or rugs from an easy-to-navigate online software programme, then select your base pattern from a range of about 28. Depending on your design, several colours pop up for you to pick from, and you can play around with differing combinations until you are satisfied. Finally, you decide on your size and fabric and place your order.

All wool rugs, pillows and totes are hand loomed and made from Peruvian wool, pillow designs can be made using either 100 per cent wool or 100 per cent hand-loomed cotton, and throws will be made of 100 per cent alpaca.

Prices start from US$110 (Dh404) for a pillow to $595 (Dh2,185) for a 100 per cent alpaca throw.

The variety is enough to satisfy most tastes, but not so overwhelming as to leave you at a loss. The design process is great fun, and the end result is a well-made accessory that stands out among the standard shop-bought pieces.
