I have lived in Dubai for eight years. Four years ago, I left a career in the perfume industry to join the antique furniture business. In 2010, I launched Antika Dubai. I now travel to India every few months to search for well-preserved, reasonably priced antiques that I sell in Dubai.
Because of inflation, it is becoming harder and harder to find real bargains in India, so I have to spend more and more time searching for the right items to add to the collection.
My latest exhibition, which started on March 8 and will run for a month, is taking place at Times Square Center in Dubai. You can find us on the ground floor, near the Music Chamber Shop.
The first antique that I ever brought in was a revolving teak chair that I found in a hair salon in the south of Jodhpur. I remember it clearly.
I also offer the Scrapwood collection, which is made out of recycled, reclaimed wood that comes from old, demolished houses in the north of India. This is developed in partnership with Christian Robilliard, a veteran of the antiques business, and Jean Michel Andoque, who operates the EMI furniture manufacturing facility in Jodphur, Rajasthan.
For my latest exhibition I have a number of new products, including a 36-drawer cabinet sourced from an old pharmacy, a collection of beautiful Pitara, or wooden chests, in their original colours, some old wardrobes, wooden cabinets and kitchen cabinets, and French-colonial style writing desks. These are all absolutely authentic and unique old pieces. Of course, there are also plenty of new additions to the Scrapwood collection.
We have also recently entered into a partnership with a Dubai-based company called Faubourg Design to promote antique and recycled wood items through exhibitions in Dubai and the other emirates.
In the future, Antika Dubai would like to set up a permanent gallery, boutique or showroom, where between two and four different kinds of homeware companies would be able to present their products.

Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD)
What is THAAD?
It is considered to be the US' most superior missile defence system.
Production:
It was first created in 2008.
Speed:
THAAD missiles can travel at over Mach 8, so fast that it is hypersonic.
Abilities:
THAAD is designed to take out projectiles, namely ballistic missiles, as they are on their downward trajectory towards their target, otherwise known as the "terminal phase".
Purpose:
To protect high-value strategic sites, such as airfields or population centres.
Range:
THAAD can target projectiles both inside and outside of the Earth's atmosphere, at an altitude of 93 miles above the Earth's surface.
Creators:
Lockheed Martin was originally granted the contract to develop the system in 1992. Defence company Raytheon sub-contracts to develop other major parts of the system, such as ground-based radar.
UAE and THAAD:
In 2011, the UAE became the first country outside of the US to buy two THAAD missile defence systems. It then deployed them in 2016, becoming the first Gulf country to do so.

What the law says
Micro-retirement is not a recognised concept or employment status under Federal Decree Law No. 33 of 2021 on the Regulation of Labour Relations (as amended) (UAE Labour Law). As such, it reflects a voluntary work-life balance practice, rather than a recognised legal employment category, according to Dilini Loku, senior associate for law firm Gateley Middle East.
“Some companies may offer formal sabbatical policies or career break programmes; however, beyond such arrangements, there is no automatic right or statutory entitlement to extended breaks,” she explains.
“Any leave taken beyond statutory entitlements, such as annual leave, is typically regarded as unpaid leave in accordance with Article 33 of the UAE Labour Law. While employees may legally take unpaid leave, such requests are subject to the employer’s discretion and require approval.”
If an employee resigns to pursue micro-retirement, the employment contract is terminated, and the employer is under no legal obligation to rehire the employee in the future unless specific contractual agreements are in place (such as return-to-work arrangements), which are generally uncommon, Ms Loku adds.

Tank warfare
Lt Gen Erik Petersen, deputy chief of programs, US Army, has argued it took a “three decade holiday” on modernising tanks.
“There clearly remains a significant armoured heavy ground manoeuvre threat in this world and maintaining a world class armoured force is absolutely vital,” the general said in London last week.
